SPECIAL EDITION FRONT PORCH FRIDAY:
9/11 25th Anniversary
📍Where were you?

Twenty-five years ago, a lot of us were sitting at our desks at school, some of you were already at work, or home taking care of families. But wherever you were, eventually the television was on, the news was breaking out of New York City. Nothing else that was supposed to matter that Tuesday morning, mattered very much at all.

And we remember what came afterward.

The flags. The first responders. The stories of strangers helping strangers. For a while, through an unimaginable amount of grief, there was this overwhelming feeling that we were Americans together.

The kids grew up and adults grew older, but that day never really grew distant for any of us who watched it unfold.

25 years later, some of us have traveled to the places we first saw on those television screens. We’ve stood beside the reflecting pools in New York, walked through the Pentagon Memorial, or found ourselves in the quiet Pennsylvania countryside at Flight 93 National Memorial.

And there’s something about standing there that brings you right back… and you remember September 11, 2001.

So today the ORT Front Porch is a place to reflect, recall, and most importantly remember the ones we lost.

Where were you on September 11, 2001? What do you remember most?
And if you’ve traveled to one of the memorials to pay your respects, what was it like to stand there?

Twenty-five years later, we still remember.
And today, we’d really like to remember together.

WEIRD DESTINATION WEDNESDAY: TOWN OF SPECTRE, ALABAMA

Just outside Millbrook, tucked away on Jackson Lake Island, sits what is left of the fictional town of Spectre from Tim Burton’s 2003 film Big Fish.

The movie was based on the novel by Alabama author Daniel Wallace, and most of the film was shot right here in Alabama. Spectre itself was custom-built on Jackson Lake Island as the strange, almost-too-perfect town Edward Bloom discovers during his travels. (Encyclopedia of Alabama)

What makes this location especially interesting is that Spectre had to appear twice in the movie: first as a pristine little town where nobody wears shoes, and later as a worn-down version of itself after Edward returns years later. For those later scenes, the production team intentionally distressed the buildings, church, roads, and landscaping to make the town look older and neglected. (AAA)

When filming ended, the crew originally planned to remove the set, but the family who owned the island chose to leave it standing. Time has added its own layer since then. Weather, flooding, deterioration, and a fire have taken out several structures, but parts of Spectre still remain on the island today. (Encyclopedia of Alabama)

You can still walk through pieces of the town, see the church, recognize spots from the movie, and find the line of shoes that became part of one of Spectre’s most memorable scenes.

And then there are the goats.

Because an aging Tim Burton movie set sitting on a private Alabama island apparently needed one more interesting detail.

Places like this are exactly why we never like building a road trip around only the obvious stops. Sometimes the thing sitting just off your route has a story every bit as interesting as the destination you were headed toward in the first place.

FRONT PORCH FRIDAY ☀️
Pull up a chair. Let’s do some real talk about the part of travel nobody posts: paying for it.

Brett and I aren’t full-time travelers with unlimited PTO. We’re regular people from Alabama with jobs, bills, five spoiled dogs, and a home that occasionally needs its own vacation budget.

Every trip we take has to fit our real life first.

We figure out what we can safely save, then build the dates, route, lodging, food, and experiences around that number—not the other way around.

Sometimes that means traveling during a different week, cutting a night, staying outside the busiest area, or packing lunch (we call them console meals) so we can allocate more of the saved funds on what actually matters.

That isn’t settling. Thats responsible planning—and it’s the same way I approach trips through Open Road Travels.

Budgeting was the biggest struggle in our recent ORT travel survey, so I created a free two-page Real-Life Travel Budget Builder to help families calculate the true cost, build a savings plan, and prepare for payment deadlines without creating a giant debt monster that’s waiting for you back at home.

What part gives you the biggest headache: saving, estimating the real cost, or making the trip fit your budget?
