It’s close to that time of year when we take part in family get togethers and parties and we show off our talents in the kitchen. 🍁🦃 My mother was an outstanding cook by anyone’s standards but during the holidays was when her talents shown brightest. 👩🏻‍🍳♥️ This first picture of her is one of my favorites because it tells a special story about who she was. This was taken Christmas morning 1991 and she had stopped her Christmas dinner preparations to open her gifts. (I know that because of the apron) My mother was fully devoted to her family and their care. No doubt in this picture she already had her turkey all done after baking all night and that aroma was the first thing to greet you when you woke up Christmas Day. 🎄 She probably had her desserts and jello salads done, and three or four dozen rolls in a pan rising slowly. She sometimes served a goose as well! No doubt, daddy had all shucked the oysters for frying at the last minute so they would be good and hot when we all sat down to eat them. Good food was plentiful for us living on the point of Tylerton. Actually, my mother’s chocolate layer cake made an appearance every Saturday without fail along with beefsteak and gravy, mashed potatoes and rolls, and in the summer soft crabs or crab cakes, wild asparagus or fresh lima beans. In the winter; collards. And, then mama would serve us the cake; always warm, rich and moist. My uncle Billy would pour the beefsteak gravy on his slice! 😂😜 I know it sounds a little crazy but we didn’t realize how special our food was until we got older, but I guess that’s the case for a lot of us. Even the multilayered cake. We saw and ate these confections so often on that it was dare I say it…ordinary. The recipe I use in my cake demonstrations is my mama’s recipe and every time I make one I am reminded that there is nothing “ordinary” about it.😌🥹♥️
