The Greatest Award a Father Can Give
It’s Father’s Day, a day set aside to salute and celebrate the men who laid the foundation for their families.
As I sit here reflecting on the solid foundation my father, William V. Porter, set for me, it is hard to find the words to express how much I loved and admired him. My father often told me that he only had an eighth-grade education because he had to leave school and work in the fields. Though he may not have had a lot of formal education, he possessed a wealth of wisdom.
After all, Solomon didn't ask God for education—he asked for wisdom. It is wisdom that helps us make good choices and sound decisions. My father shared that kind of wisdom with me every day at what I affectionately call WVP University—his yard.
This Father's Day, I want to share three things I learned from my dad.
First, he was a WWII Veteran. I remember listening with amazement as he told me stories about driving General Patton during the war. Those stories filled me with pride and respect for his service.
Second, my dad was known throughout the community as a man who could fix almost anything. Chances are, if you grew up around Corinth, he may have worked on something at your house. Watching him serve others is where I developed my own love for serving mankind.
Third, I think about the greatest award I have ever received. One day, my dad and I were sitting in our recliners when he looked at me and said, "Boy, you haven't ever given me any problems."
I have received several awards throughout my life, but none compare to those words from my father. That simple statement meant more to me than any plaque, trophy, or certificate ever could.
Today, I salute all fathers and father figures who continue to make a difference in the lives of their children and communities. Happy Father's Day!
