Today we back up to June of 2021! We started with an overgrown railroad and a few pieces of broken equipment! Our small team put in the hours and the time to do what everyone said was impossible. We worked evenings and weekends on a list of repairs that was absolutely daunting. Nobody complained, they kept showing up for long days and a paycheck that consisted of a few pizzas! Slowly we saw progress and the hope of opening the railroad. The little green engine, Alco 5 was the heartbeat of our dreams! She would soon roar to life again to save the Adirondack Branch one more time! Over the next few week we will be highlighting the work we did to get the railroad running again!

We loved hosting the Broadalbin-Perth Central School District kindergartners for a scenic train ride field trip this morning! šŸš‚

For many of the students, this was their very first train ride, which made the experience extra special ā¤ļø

The morning was filled with smiles, singing, and excitement along the rails ā€” including a special ā€œHappy Birthdayā€ song for the birthday Princess, Conductor Hal šŸŽ‰

Itā€™s our Birthday!!! Everyone asks how we started a railroad! The simple answer is ā€œAlco 5ā€! The little engine that could! It was all we had! We spent 2 years getting her to run again and she powered every train for our first two years! As we celebrate our fifth season, Alco 5 will handle our Memorial Day Weekend trains for just $5!!!!! If you havenā€™t been out to ride, this is the time!!! Hop on any of our Memorial Day weekend trains for just five bucks! We wanna thank our community and all of our supporters for helping us do the impossible! We literally could not ask for a better community and town!

**Equipment Highlight**
As we celebrate our 5th birthday this year we will be highlighting work we did to get our railroad started! We recently changed some wheels on the open air car and discovered its hidden history! Our open air car was originally built for the Monon Railroad around 1944 as Monon 3635! The Monon was absorbed into the Louisville & Nashville. These cars were container cars or open Gondolas. Eventually this car made its way to the Upper Hudson River Railroad as an open air car. The next operator, Saratoga North Creek did not run open air cars and cut the sides off to make it a Maintenance of way car. When we obtained it in 2017, we converted it back to a popular open air configuration with picnic tables!

Very few original Monon Railroad cars are still around! Check out www.monon.org to learn more!

You can ride this open air car on any of our train and we still have some room this Sunday for Motherā€™s Day!!!!

Continuing to highlight our amazing SC&H crew and their moms this Motherā€™s Day šŸ’šŸš‚

Jen Al-Beikā€”sheā€™s a fantastic photographer (Blue Phoenix Arts) and has been helping document the Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway since the very beginning! šŸ“øšŸš‚

We asked Jen what her mom means to herā€¦

Jen:
ā€œMy mom has always been there to support meā€”no matter whatā€™s happening in my life. Through college and vet school, she was there when I needed that extra push. Sheā€™s helped with my son when I needed a break, and sheā€™s supported me creatively from the very beginning.

That meant traveling all over New England with me to photograph trains back in 2019. My son loved having my mom along for the ride. Even when sheā€™s not with us chasing trains, sheā€™s always been right there supporting me.ā€ šŸ’•

We also asked her a couple fun questionsā€¦

Has your mom ever ridden the Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway?

Jen: ā€œNoā€”and I need to change that!ā€

What do you think she would enjoy most about the Motherā€™s Day Tea Train?

Today we jacked up a box car and the open air car and switched out a set of ā€œtrucksā€. The old set on the open air car had whatā€™s known as plain ļæ¼bearings or friction bearings. This style required constant oiling and maintenance. We switched them out for a more modern newer type of roller bearing truck that was under one of our storage box cars. This type of work makes the cars more reliable and reduces the chances of hot bearings.
