PRESS RELEASE: Isle Royale National Park Updates Food Storage Regulations

To implement the most effective methods of wildlife and visitor safety, Isle Royale park managers continue to evaluate and improve food storage regulations. Food storage covers the proper storage of food, trash, scented items, cooking supplies, cooking utensils, and fish/fish parts. Updated regulations went into effect April 16, 2026.

Everyone backpacking, camping, canoeing, and kayaking, must store food, trash, and scented items in a food storage locker, or in an approved, animal-resistant, hard-sided container.

For boaters, food, trash, and scented items need to be stored in a food storage locker, or in an approved, animal-resistant, hard-sided container, or inside an enclosed, hard-sided, locked boat cabin or compartment.

If you’re camping off-trail, store your food, trash, and scented items in approved, animal-resistant, hard-sided containers and stash 200 feet away from campsite or hang those items from a tree. Food hanging is not allowed in campgrounds.

Day visitors, keep your food with you and store packs and other items temporarily in backpack storage areas in Rock Harbor and Windigo/Ozaagaateng.

Containers must be approved, hard-sided, and animal-resistant. Soft-sided containers, such as mesh or dry bags, must be stored in a food storage locker.

For any activities in the park, never leave food or packs unattended. Do not store food, trash, and scented items inside shelters or tents.

Well, 2 days of gale force winds are not fun! We plan to run 2 trips on Saturday, 9/6, to play catch up from 2 days of cancellations.

If you were scheduled to depart to go to Isle Royale this Thursday, Friday, or Saturday check your email for updates. If you have a loved one stuck on Isle Royale, tell them to check with the Rangers in Rock Harbor for updates.

Mother Superior is in a mood!

Due to severe weather on Lake Superior, we have cancelled today's trip to Isle Royale. Unfortunately, tomorrow is not looking much better as there is already a gale watch posted.

Our plan at this time is to make a decision about Friday's trip at approx. 5pm today. If you are scheduled for Thursday or Friday, check your email as we will send updates as we have them.

If you have a loved one on Isle Royale know that we will travel to get them as soon as it is safe to do so and don't worry, the island has provisions!

08/17/2025

Due to rough seas we had to cancel today's trip to Isle Royale. If you are scheduled for today, 8/17, or tomorrow, 8/18, check your email as we will send updates about departure times as we know them.

We do not have information at this point about our 8/19 sailing. There is a possibility of delay, but we will contact those folks via email sometime tomorrow when we know better what the next 2 days will look like.

Apologies for the inconvenience!
