“Jeff, we missed the vessel.”

That sentence can turn a normal day into a supply chain fire drill.

When I managed exports at Honda, we loaded a container, completed the vanning layout, and then missed one critical step. The pickup was never released. The container sat. The vessel cutoff passed.

The result was painful and immediate. We had to unload the container and air freight the parts to protect overseas production schedules.

Here’s what I did next, and why it matters for shippers.
1. Stabilize the shipment
We protected production first, then worked backwards.
2. Find the root cause
This was not a “bad employee” problem. It was a process and visibility problem.
3. Install countermeasures
We put in a scheduled release cadence, pickup confirmation checkpoints, and escalation triggers tied to vessel cutoffs. That issue never happened again.
