Moving internationally in 2026? Here are the real numbers — not the broker estimates.

Most families researching international moves get wildly different quotes and don't know what to believe. Here's why: most online estimates come from brokers who mark up real movers' prices and hand your move to whoever pays the highest commission.

The actual costs from Washington DC and Northern Virginia:

📦 20ft sole-use container to Europe: $4,200–$7,800
📦 40ft sole-use container to Europe: $7,500–$12,800

What most quotes leave out:

⚠️ Customs clearance: $300–$800
⚠️ Destination port fees: $800–$2,500
⚠️ Full replacement insurance: 1–2% of declared value
⚠️ Storage if home isn't ready: $150–$400/month

At BLUEmove International Relocation — FMC-registered, IAM-certified, 21+ years serving DC, Virginia and Maryland — every cost goes in writing before you commit. Whether you're an embassy family relocating from Crystal City or a private family shipping to Germany, Portugal or the UK, you get the full picture upfront.

More Americans are moving to Germany than most people realise — and it's easier than you'd expect.

Germany has some of the lowest competition for skilled American professionals of any European destination right now. The EU Blue Card fast-tracks residency for qualified applicants. The new Opportunity Card lets Americans enter Germany and look for work for up to a year. And the cost of living — particularly in Berlin — runs 30–40% lower than Washington DC for comparable space.

For families relocating from the DC area, the German connection is often already built in. Frankfurt hosts the US Consulate General. Berlin is home to the US Embassy. Munich has a US Consulate and consistently ranks among the world's most livable cities. These aren't random postings — they're active rotations for diplomatic and government-affiliated families we work with regularly.

After 21+ years moving American families internationally from Columbia, Maryland — FMC-registered and IAM-certified — we handle every stage of your DC to Germany move. Packing, ocean freight, German customs clearance, and delivery to your address.

🇺🇸➡️🇬🇧 What's it actually like for Americans living in the UK?

After 21+ years helping American families make this move from Washington DC, here's what they consistently tell us once they've settled in.

✅ The genuinely good:

NHS healthcare — once you're registered, the financial anxiety disappears

Weekend trips to Paris, Amsterdam, Edinburgh become completely normal

British pub culture and the sense of neighbourhood community

History literally everywhere — your local pub probably predates the United States

😅 The real adjustments:

Everything IS smaller — houses, cars, kitchen appliances

Driving on the left takes longer than you expect

British understatement is a skill that takes months to read correctly

The weather gets to people from November onwards — be honest with yourself about this one

🏠 One thing that surprises almost every family:

The American community infrastructure in the UK is far bigger than most people realise before they move. The American School in London. The American Women's Club. Active Facebook expat groups in every major city. You're not starting from scratch.

We put together an honest guide to what American expat life in the UK really looks like — the good, the hard, and the very practical first steps.

You got three international moving quotes. Two are similar. One is significantly cheaper.

Here's what that low quote usually doesn't tell you:

Your belongings will share a container with strangers. They'll sit in a warehouse until the company finds enough other customers to fill it. The container will make multiple port stops — handled by crews you never approved or even met.

The "4–6 week" estimate becomes 3–4 months. Surprise fees appear on arrival. Damage claims are nearly impossible to prove when five different crews have handled your goods.

We've seen this happen too many times in 21+ years of international moving.

At BLUEmove we don't do groupage. Every shipment gets a sole-use container or a direct LCL service — your goods go straight from Washington DC to your destination. No shared space. No mystery stops. Destination handling charges included in every quote.

FMC-registered and IAM-certified. Based in Columbia, Maryland.

When a diplomatic posting ends in Washington DC, the move that follows isn't like any ordinary international relocation.

Embassy protocol coordination. Diplomatic shipping exemptions. Pet relocation documentation. Flexible storage when posting dates shift. And a departure timeline that can change with very little notice.

After 21+ years serving Washington DC's diplomatic community, BLUEmove understands every one of these pressures — and we've written the complete guide for foreign embassy staff and diplomatic families preparing to leave DC.

A few things the guide covers that most moving companies won't tell you upfront:

📋 Book at least 8 weeks out — diplomatic moves require more lead time than standard international relocations due to protocol office coordination and customs documentation

🚗 Diplomatic vehicle shipping exemptions vary significantly by country — we handle all exemption documentation directly with your embassy's protocol office

🌍 We ship everywhere — including regions many standard international movers don't serve directly: Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific

🐾 Pet relocation coordinated alongside your household goods shipment

FMC-registered and IAM-certified, BLUEmove holds the two credentials that matter most for diplomatic ocean freight from US ports.

Portugal has over 500 miles of Atlantic coastline — and right now, American families are discovering it in numbers we've never seen before.

The reasons are easy to understand when you look at the actual numbers.

A family of four living in Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal spends €2,000–€2,400 a month. In Tavira in the eastern Algarve — often called the Venice of the Algarve — it's €2,300–€2,700. Even in Cascais, Portugal's most sought-after Riviera town, a family lives well for €2,800–€3,200 a month. Compare that to Washington DC or New York and the case makes itself.

BLUEmove's new guide covers all 15 of Portugal's most beautiful coastal towns — with real monthly cost data, average rental prices, D7 visa information, and our actual shipping costs included. Because a guide without those numbers isn't really a guide.

We ship to Portugal every month. Full container loads from the US East Coast: $4,000–$8,000 door-to-door. Transit time: 6–8 weeks.

That moment when you stand in the middle of your home and think — what do we actually do with all of this?

It's one of the most common things American families tell us before an international move. And it's exactly why we built this guide.
The Ship, Sell or Store framework is how professional international movers think about your belongings — and it can save you thousands of dollars if you apply it before a single box is packed.

Here's the short version:

📦 Ship — quality furniture, children's belongings, sentimental items, books, art, quality kitchen equipment. These almost always make the journey.
💰 Sell — large appliances (voltage differences make them problematic), flat-pack furniture, anything that costs more to ship than replace at your destination.
✈️ Store — seasonal items that don't suit your new climate, things you'll need on your return, furniture that won't fit temporary housing.

And the decision tool that ties it all together: if the replacement cost is 3x or more than the shipping cost, ship it. If not, sell it before you go.

We've published the complete guide — including a 12-step moving abroad checklist from 6 months out to your final week.
