Keeping kids safe in the car isn’t just about having the right seat—it’s about making sure every caregiver feels confident using it correctly.

Grandparents and other family members often step in to help with transportation, and that support is invaluable. But car seat recommendations and best practices have changed over time, which can make it difficult to know what’s current.

That’s where Child Passenger Safety Technicians come in. They help bridge the gap by providing hands-on guidance, answering questions, and making sure caregivers understand how to properly install and use car seats for today’s safety standards.
When all caregivers are informed and confident, kids are better protected—no matter who is behind the wheel.

Today, Jimena presented our CarFit Presentation at The Village at Manor Park in Midland, TX in preparation for the CarFit event tomorrow at the same location. Participants eagerly discussed how CarFit was applicable to them when they may be driving a friend's vehicle or a rental, noting the transferable skills they are excited to learn in today's presentation and tomorrow's event. Jimena discussed Why CarFit Matters because:
- Personal mobility is critical to healthy aging.
- Age-related changes can make driving uncomfortable or unsafe.
- Vehicle safety features may require adjustments to fit driver.
- Resources can improve knowledge safety and mobility.

Jimena, Pam and Amanda look forward to an exciting day tomorrow completing CarFits in Midland and seeing all of these participants in the morning! Drive Safe and Buckle up!

Last week, Julia and Pam attended The Brazos Valley Council of Government in Bryan, Texas, where Julia presented to the Mayor and board of directors. She gave an overview of our Mature Driver programs and the challenges we face as we age and continue to drive. There was 31 people present from surrounding counties. Thank you to Stacey Urbanczyk, Program Manager at Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging and the Brazos Valley Aging & Disability Resource Center.

On Friday, June 12, 2026, Jimena joined Watch UR BAC at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center National Safety Fair at Fort Bliss. We enjoyed connecting with community members and sharing information about our programs. Attendees learned how making safe driving choices can help keep everyone safe on the road, regardless of age.

The way we protected kids years ago isn’t the same as today—and that’s a good thing.

As research improves, so do car seat designs and recommendations. What may have been considered safe in the past doesn’t always meet today’s best practice standards. That’s why it’s important for parents and caregivers to stay informed as guidance evolves.

Today’s recommendations focus on:
✔ Choosing the right seat based on a child’s age, size, and development
✔ Keeping children in each stage as long as possible for better protection
✔ Making sure car seats are installed and used correctly every time

Even if you’ve used car seats before, it’s worth checking what’s current. Updated guidance helps ensure children are better protected on every ride.

Monday, June 8th, 2026, Pam conducted a Safety Bingo Program to 100 seniors at the Margaret E Blizzard Senior Center. Thank you to the help of Tammy Schrader at the HolisticCare Management Home Care. It was a fun and very busy with over 75 prizes being given away. They were able to have fun and get educational information about staying safe behind the wheel.

Attending Traffic Safety Bingo give participants a chance to learn traffic safety facts with each number called out on the bingo cards. Did you know that in 2023, there were 3,498,057 licensed drivers in Texas over the age of 65?

Thursday, June 4th, Pam attended the 2026 Brazos County Health and Safety Expo at the Brazos Center in Bryan Texas. There was approximately 500 in attendance through out the day and Pam was able to speak to about 50 seniors directly about our programs we offer.

Each time we are at a Health Fair, our booth offers information varying from Health and Wellness and how that may affect your driving, traffic safety information, motorcycle safety, as well as sometimes special guest appearances by County Extension Agents and TxDOT collaborators. We always enjoy being out in the community, answering questions and making our newest friend which could lead to a new collaboration. Be sure to stop by and say hello if you ever see us out and about at a Health or Safety Fair near you!

After conducting an event in Comfort on Wednesday, June 3, Janet and Pam traveled to Fredericksburg to help residents of Woodland Cottages better understand the advanced safety and convenience technologies available in newer vehicles.

The program was very well attended, with such a strong turnout that additional seating had to be brought in to accommodate participants. A group of 25 residents learned about 12 vehicle technologies commonly found in newer models, including how these systems operate and how they contribute to safer driving.

The discussion was highly engaging, with participants asking thoughtful questions and sharing their experiences. By the end of the session, attendees left with a greater understanding of modern vehicle technology and increased confidence in its role in enhancing roadway safety.

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026, Pam and Janet conducted a Safety Bingo at the Comfort Golden Age Senior Center in Comfort, Texas. It was a lunch and learn for the seniors. Also present Kendall County AgriLife Extension & 4-H FCH agent, Kera Dutton. It was a fun and energetic group.

Have you attended one of our Traffic Safety Bingo Events? They combine the fun of Bingo with Traffic Safety facts to participants a fun, engaging socialization time.

Facts from Traffic Safety Bingo range from tips to help participants while driving to statistics on accidents and events out on the road. Each one designed to help keep drivers safe and be more thoughtful as they move about in their day to day lives. The next time you are out and about, headed to Bingo or other fun activities, be sure to drive friendly, be smart and drive safe, the Texas Way.
