The Great Northern Railroad, under James J. Hill, the so called empire builder who's railroad inspired Taggert Transcontinental in Atlas Shrugged, became the Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad's parent company in 1929 until its closure in 1940. This book details the steam and electric power of the Great Northern used to cross Steven's Pass in the Cascades of Washington, west of the Spokane and Inland Empire Railway. It's interesting to note that Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad's Westinghouse boxcabs were used in the construction of the present day Cascade Tunnel. The longest tunnel in the United States.
