Most visitors walk right over it without a glance.

The faith did not start with us. It was handed from the apostles to their disciples, and from them to theirs, an unbroken line that we have been grafted into. The traditions of the early church are not scripture, but they carry the weight of the Spirit who has been speaking to his people since the beginning. To read Revelation here, where John received it, is to feel how short that chain actually is.

Hidden across three valleys in Cappadocia, the cave city of Zelve is one of the sites most Turkey tours pass over — and one of the most remarkable. Join Joel Richardson as he takes you there.

Carved straight into the rock, Zelve holds hundreds of caves, and a maze of rooms and passages that climb the canyon walls. People from Cappadocia are listed as among those present at Pentecost, and traveled home with their new belief in Christ.

It would come to be one of the earliest centers of Christian monastic life in Cappadocia, and families went on living here in the rock into the 20th century. A path even winds up through the mountain to windows near the summit — one of the most mysterious vantage points in all of Turkey.
