“My third Umrah. The first time I understood what I was doing.”

That sentence came from a man in his fifties, standing in the courtyard on his last night, talking about his guide.

He had been twice before with other companies. He knew the motions. Nobody had ever explained the meaning of them to him while he was doing them.

Nearly half the reviews our travellers leave mention the imam or the guide. It is the most repeated theme in our reputation, and we have never asked anyone to write it.

Friday in Madinah does not feel like Friday anywhere else.

The city begins filling at fajr.

By the time the khutbah starts there is no floor left. The rows have spread through the courtyards and out into the marble streets, and thousands of people sit shoulder to shoulder under the umbrellas in complete silence.

Then the imam speaks — and you realise you are hearing a khutbah in the city where the first khutbah was given.

We build our Madinah days around this. Nobody schedules a bus on a Friday morning.
