🚆 A new chapter for Cleveland transit has arrived!

This week, the Port of Cleveland was proud to help welcome the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s (GCRTA) first new rail car as part of its major fleet modernization.

The delivery is part of a comprehensive $435 million investment to completely replace GCRTA’s aging rail fleet, bringing riders greater safety, comfort, cleanliness and reliability.

The Port is proud to play a role in transporting these rail cars to Cleveland and helping bring this transformative investment to our community.

We’re excited to see these new rail cars hit the tracks and help move Cleveland forward!

For generations, the Buckeye Booster was a familiar sight along Cleveland’s waterfront.

The 150-ton heavy-lift crane helped move some of the most unique and important cargo to pass through the Port of Cleveland including military tanks bound for Germany, electrical infrastructure for the Lake Erie islands and the Benson Ford.

It also helped create work for generations of Cleveland-area longshoremen.

“I hate to see it go it’s been a part of my life, my whole career,” said John Baker Jr., who spent years working at the docks.

The Buckeye Booster completed its final project in 2018 and has sat idle ever since. Now, the historic crane is being removed from the General Cargo Terminal.

Take a look at these photos and learn more about why the Buckeye Booster represents such a significant part of the Port of Cleveland’s history.
