Locust Heights & Western Railroad

Locust Heights & Western Railroad A privately run railroad that runs on Wednesday evenings from June-Oct at 7pm & 7:30pm. Our track is narrow gauge and runs for about 3/4 of a mile.

This climax steam locomotive was built by Keith Mason & friends in 1974.......we have been running almost every Wednesday evening since then. We do not advertise or charge a fee to ride, but we do gladly accept donations. It is a coal burning steam engine, so you may go home with a few cinders. We have an all volunteer crew of loyal, dedicated friends and family. We do sometimes run for special ev

ents and birthday parties.......depending on whether we can arrange for a crew. This railroad is owned by the late Keith Mason. His wife Jean Mason, and grandson, Tre Roach. We continue to run in memory of Keith Mason. Thank you for your patronage.

We would like to thank Phillips Equipment LLC and Perkins Oil & Gas Inc for their generous donations to our railroad. Both of these businesses are dedicated to helping us keep this railroad going for all to enjoy! This year we are doing something a bit different. We are going to be asking for sponsors. If your business would like to donate to our railroad we will put up a sign advertising your business and that you are a generous sponsor. Checks can be made payable to Locust Heights and Western Railroad and mailed to 115 Spence Drive, Clarksburg, WV 26301. We also have a Venmo (see the link in the comments!) Our expenses have all gone up, like everything else these days and it takes a lot to keep us going from year to year. We appreciate all donations and look forward to our 2026 season. Thank you!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION! PLEASE READ!!!!
Our 2026 season opens Wednesday evening, June 3rd! We are trying to touch on every question you may have in this post!
● We operate every Wednesday from June through October with an occasional weekend date throughout the season and a Christmas Special in December.
● Our first run is at 7pm and the second is at approximately 7:30pm.
● We ask that if you want a train ride that you kindly arrive by 7:25pm. That way our crew will know if they have to do a 3rd run to accommodate everyone. If you arrive by 7:25pm, you will get a train ride. If you arrive LATER than 7:25pm we can't guarantee you will get a train ride.
● We do NOT take reservations. There is sometimes a small wait.
● Please enter via Locust Heights Drive and exit by our back gravel road at the end of our parking lot. It takes you right back down to Rt. 19.
● When parking in our lot, it is best to back into your space, as it makes leaving easier. You may park on both sides of the gravel road ( grass side and gravel side.) If our lot is full, someone will direct you to our secondary lot.
● We typically always run our steam locomotive, but if we are not able to, we try to announce in advance that we will run our gasoline locomotive. We reserve the right to change locomotives at any time.
● When you arrive please get a ticket to ride. We DO NOT charge a fee, but can not operate our railroad without your generous donations. We accept cash, Venmo, and checks made out to Locust Heights & Western Railroad.
● We are not handicapped accessible, but will do whatever it takes to make sure you can board and take a train ride. We have an awesome crew.
● Our crew are all volunteers and do this hard work because they love it. Please remember to thank them. It's hard work.
● Our address is 115 Spence Drive Clarksburg, WV 26301
● We ask that you please watch your children and make sure they are not in the road, as there are homes on this private road and cars do go through at times. Safety is our top priority.
● This is a coal fired steam locomotive and you will get some cinders and soot on you from time to time. It's part of the experience.
● If your children are sensitive to loud noises we recommend you bring them ear protection, as our whistle can be loud.
● Our restroom facility is an outhouse. It is very nice and clean. It is the only facility for the public.
● We do not serve food or drink unless it is a special event and announced in advance on our page!
● WE run rain or shine. But will wait out severe storms.
● Please make sure to check our FB page each week to watch for updates.

We look forward to our 2026 season and seeing all of you!!!

As we enjoy our "winter break" ....we thought we would share this wonderful video made by Carl Feather! He did an amazing job with the video and also has wonderful books available that include an article about our railroad and many other fabulous WV places! You can find them for sale on Amazon. The Wandering Back-Roads West Virginia Series. I believe there are 4 volumes, plus many other great books by Mr. Feather! Check them out! Enjoy and stay warm til we ride the rails again.
