🏆 Voted Best Tourist Attraction
We offer each passenger a first-class experience on our four-hour round trip from Clarkdale to Perkinsville and back. Climb Aboard the Most Scenic Train Ride in Arizona – Verde Canyon Railroad

Travel far beyond the boundaries of everyday life. This classic train delivers passengers deep into a scenic Arizona Canyon, offering unsurp

assed comfort amid a sculpted and colorful landscape. The stunning Sedona scenery forms an unforgettable backdrop for the awe-inspiring journey. Imagine Sedona and its world-famous landscape without the development. Imagine the same towering red rock buttes and towering formations but with no roads or resorts, no homes or hotels. Carved by the Verde River, Verde Canyon’s high cliff walls are adorned with cactus and agave overlook this splashy oasis, while graceful cottonwoods and sycamores canopy the water. Ride the Verde Canyon Railroad and discover what the West was like as a remote and rugged frontier. Mighty locomotives rumble out of the station with vintage cars in tow, whisking travelers through a 734-foot limestone tunnel to another century while keeping them rooted in the plush comfort of the new millennium. For over 35 years, Verde Canyon Railroad has provided the thrill of a lifetime for those seeking adventure, romance, nostalgia and forever memories. Two FP7 locomotives, only two of 12 remaining in North America, provide the muscle that pulls the renovated vintage cars. All accommodations offer spacious living room-style seating, champagne upon boarding, complementary appetizers and service at your seat. All cars have access to open-air viewing cars offering dramatic 360-degree views and photo opportunities. The exclusive caboose is designed for one private party of no more than six adults, featuring oversized chairs, sumptuous appetizers, a personal valet and two cupola seats – raised six feet up, providing a birds-eye view through the canyon. Spacious seating, amazing views and impeccable service await you onboard the Verde Canyon Railroad…and that’s just the beginning. The combination of festive food and beverage, train comfort and camaraderie, along with the encompassing wilderness of the canyon, makes for a truly memorable experience. If there’s something else we can do to make your train experience a memorable one, all you have to do is ask. Even after 35 years, the Verde Canyon Railroad still prizes passenger comfort as an essential part of the journey. Every day is special to someone. Make it an extraordinary celebration aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad, combining romance, elegance and adventure, railroad-style. Anything short of letting you drive the train; we can probably work out. On special days you want time to slow down so you can savor every delicious moment. Verde Canyon Railroad—a vintage train traveling over track laid a century ago into an ancient Canyon—is in the business of timeless travel. The soothing rhythm of the rails, breath-stealing scenery and pampering service combine to give you an unforgettable experience.

Around milepost 31.4, the train starts down the grade, and on the left side of the tracks is an old telegraph line.

As crews laid down rails in 1911, they also installed telegraph poles and strung wire. This was the only way the men could connect with the outside world from the remote and barely accessible Verde Canyon. The men always carried a transmitter and could tap into the telegraph line to send a message.

Today, our track and train crews communicate via satellite phones.

The highest and longest bridge on our route is one of many thrills on this journey.

Spanning S.O.B. Canyon, the 175-foot-long "S.O.B. Bridge" carries the train across a dramatic 150-foot-deep basalt gorge—and trust us, it’s a moment you feel as much as you see.

Built by men and mules, this trestle is an incredible piece of railroad engineering. And while the name has taken on plenty of legendary meanings over the years, it officially stands for Superintendent of Bridges.

History, scenery, and a little heart-racing adventure!

Your journey aboard Verde Canyon Railroad begins at milepost 38, slightly north of
the train depot in Clarkdale, Arizona, and the train will take you as far as milepost 18, to the old ghost town of Perkinsville.

Leaving the station, the railroad passes through the old slag dump. Slag is part of the waste material from the smelter, and was actually poured in a molten state. The rusted iron pipes and sheet iron originally formed a barrier to keep the molten waste from the tracks while the slag cooled into the very hard material it is now. The mountain of slag covers about 40 acres, averages 40 feet in depth and represents almost 40 years of operation. Stories are told by longtime residents of seeing red hot ribbons glowing in the dark when the smelter was active.

Verde Canyon Railroad isn't just a ride — it’s a ride through history!

The first railroad bridge you travel over aboard Verde Canyon Railroad has been recycled. The trestle was actually constructed using an old turntable from the Prescott roundhouse. Just beyond this point, the Verde River emerges from its inner gorge and becomes entrenched below the tracks in a narrow steep-walled canyon. The dark rock that forms these sheer cliffs is basalt, a form of cooled lava. The train travels on top of this layer of volcanic rock for the next three miles.

Verde Canyon Railroad takes passengers on a breathtaking journey deep into Arizona’s stunning red rock Canyon and untouched wilderness aboard a historic railroad originally built in 1912. Traveling along tracks that wind beside the Verde River, through rugged cliffs, remote landscapes, and scenery only accessible by train. The experience combines vintage rail travel, rich history, and the raw beauty of the American Southwest into one unforgettable adventure.
