Jim Frisk of St Albans, VT made a day-trip to Claremont on Monday, May 30. He posted this on the Amtrak Vermonter and Valley Flyer page after his return home. Since "share" was not an option, I've copied his post & photos here: "After an unseasonably cool, rainy June day yesterday here in St Albans (this Montana boy prefers a cool day over a hot humid one anytime though!), its a gorgeous Sunday morning, a great day for another trip on the Vermonter. Before I focus on my trip today though, I realized I havent shared with the group a recent trip I took--on Memorial Day--to Claremont.
The Memorial Day trip was my first visit to Claremont ever, not just on the Vermonter. It was so great to finally meet some of the Claremont Station Volunteers, some of whom I was able to spend the day with while we checked out the many interesting and fun sites around town! Lunch at Tremont House of Pizza (generous, delicious slices for a buck and a quarter each--cant beat that). A walk around downtown--with gorgeous river views, saw many of Claremont's historic buildings, including the Moody building, the Common Man Inn (the rooms with views overlooking the nearby river i bet are nice especially), old mills etc.
Although the station is not downtown, it is close enough for those who can (and have) a bike--or for the adventurous, even walk (there are sidewalks, and appears totally safe). Before heading into town though one can grab a bite to eat at the food truck near the station (if its open the day of travel) and maybe even get a bike at the nearby bike shop for some fun (theres a rail trail that leads out of town).
A highlight of the visit was getting to see Steve (Claremont station volunteer Sharon's husband) play taps at 3:00 as part of the national "Taps Across America".
Dinner at Ramuntos and then a quick stroll through Moody Park (seems a lot of places in Claremont are named after Moody) with its gorgeous views before getting back to the station to catch the train to St Albans.
It was a great trip, and I want to thank Sharon and her husband Steve for "showing me the town", and also Jim and Maggie May, and the other station volunteers that I met. I plan to make many more trips to Claremont--next one possibly July 4th weekend! I'll post more pics of future Claremont trips I take and encourage anyone and everyone to make a day of it (or more!) on a Amtrak Vermonter trip to Claremont!"
