The 2027 Social Security raise is still a forecast. After August's inflation report, estimates sit at 3.5% to 3.6%, up from 2.8% this year. Five dates turn that forecast into a deposit.
Oct. 14. The Bureau of Labor Statistics posts September inflation at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, and Social Security announces the official raise that day. The formula compares average prices for July, August and September with the same three months of 2025. There is nothing to apply for; the raise is automatic.
Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Medicare open enrollment. Drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans can be switched for Jan. 1, which makes it the only date here where a decision changes the outcome.
By late November. Part B, the doctor-visit half of Medicare, gets its 2027 price. The Medicare trustees project $209.50 a month, up $6.60 from $202.90, and for most retirees it comes out before the payment lands. That figure is still a projection, and the final one can come in higher or lower.
December. The notice. Last year, online accounts showed it from late November, and paper letters began in early December. It lists the new amount, each deduction and the payment date.
Dec. 31 to Jan. 27. The money. SSI arrives early, on Dec. 31, because New Year's Day falls on a Friday. Most retirees are paid by birth date: Jan. 13 for the 1st to 10th, Jan. 20 for the 11th to 20th, Jan. 27 for the 21st to 31st.
In dollars, the raise shrinks on the way to the bank. On the average retired-worker check of $2,088, 3.5% is about $73 a month. The projected Part B increase takes back $6.60, leaving about $66.
The income lines that decide whether Social Security is taxed, $25,000 for single filers and $32,000 for married couples filing jointly, have not changed since 1984. Benefits rise in most years while those lines stay put, so each raise can pull slightly more of a benefit into taxable income.
Most of this calendar runs without any help. The raise arrives on its own, and a Medicare plan that still covers the same drugs at a similar cost in 2027 can simply stay.
Mark Oct. 14 for the percent and Dec. 7 for the only deadline, and let the December letter set the budget.
