The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates the nation's second largest public transportation system--a regional transit system that serves the City of Chicago and 40 neighboring communities. CTA provides ~1.6 million rides on an average weekday, accounting for over 80% of all transit trips taken in the six-county Chicago metropolitan region.

This October, CTA welcomed another 2026 graduating class to the CTA workforce!

Acting President Nora Leerhsen addressed the 82 graduates at a ceremony recognizing their achievement. The employees represent departments including Bus Operations, Bus Maintenance, Rail Maintenance, Rail Station Management, Rail Operations, and Bus Service Management.

Each graduate has put in the hard work, dedication, and commitment needed to successfully complete their training and take the next step in their career at CTA.

Congratulations to all 82 graduates, and welcome to the CTA team!

Construction of the 4.9 mile-long State Street Subway (now part of the CTA Red Line) began in 1938 near Chicago Avenue.
After five years of construction, Chicago's first subway was ready for operation and opened to the public on this day in 1943.

The Lake Street Bridge closure will impact Green and Pink Line service from October 13-26.
The construction, led by the Chicago Department of Transportation, will rehabilitate the 109-year-old bridge so it can continue serving as a vital connection for transit riders, motorists, pedestrians, and river traffic into Chicago’s Central Business District.

The Loomis entrance at the Racine Blue Line station has a new(-ish) look 😎
Located at 431 S. Loomis Street, the retro-style signage preserves the station's historic character while complementing the modernized, accessible main entrance on Racine Avenue.

CTA salutes the life and legacy of Dolly Parton on Dolly Parton Day. Through her Imagination Library, she put more than 200 million books into the hands of young children, and she believed the journey to a bright future starts early. That belief lives on at CTA, where our new children's benches give our youngest riders a space of their own. Today, the Pink Line carries a little extra meaning, and to everyone working 9-to-5 (and every shift in between), we're proud to get you there.
