✍🏾🌍 Today and always we give thanks for the Shabazz’s lives and legacy. Some may remember in those early days when I was in Student Diversity at Loyola in the 90’s. Dr. Betty Shabazz graced us with her presence, leadership, direction and powerful prophetic and empowering words that stick with me to this day. In those days, I learned to sit on the front row. And in her keynote, she came down from the podium and stood and spoke right to us and over us - “YOU YOU YOU are our FUTURE WORLD LEADERS.”
She repeated this again and again and addressed us this way from that time on. She did not hesitate. She did not hold back. I mean she spoke it like she really believed and as it was already so.
My my! Her words, this affirmation lodged in every cell of my body. As I am here today, I see her words have come to pass and are coming to pass.
In many of our cultures and circles, we belittle each other, dim each other down or at best don’t say anything. In fact, I’ve worked in some cultures here where they refuse to compliment, celebrate, affirm or acknowledge each other’s greatness, assignment, or what is blooming.
Sitting under Dr. Betty Shabazz’s voice and teachings taught me so much. In fact it was that day, early on that I thought, THIS is the type of Dr. I want to be.
From her I learned that right and boldly spoken words can cut through all the uncertainty of current situations and expectations and that those words do indeed come to pass.
What are we saying to people? What are we saying to ourselves? To one another.
From that point, I latched on to Dr. Betty Shabazz as a mentor from a distance. I think I may have heard her speak one other time and communicated with her once. Always, I would think what it would have been like to witness her and the Honorable Minister Malcolm X El-hajj Malik El-Shabazz. The power and love of their lives live on, even through us. ❤️❤️🌹I am grateful.
Born May 28, 1934, Dr. Betty Shabazz walked through this world as a nurse, a professor, a civil rights advocate, and a mother of six. She gave generously — of her knowledge, her heart, and her time. Today we pause to honor the fullness of who she was and the light she left behind. Happy Birthday, Dr. Shabazz. We carry you with us. 🌹
