Weighing more than 218 tons, this oversized load began its journey in Brazil, arrived at the Port of Tacoma and moved east by rail – starting on Union Pacific and handed off to Norfolk Southern to reach its final destination.

This is what rail does best: move the biggest, most complex freight with precision, scale and reliability. CEO Jim Vena underscored Chicago’s central role in the nation’s freight network at the 118th Annual Chicago Traffic Club Dinner, where nearly $3 trillion in goods and 25% of U.S. freight trains move through the region each year.

Vena compared today’s U.S. rail network to a cross-country flight with no nonstop option — forced to stop at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, then buy a separate ticket departing Midway to finish the trip.

The Union Pacific– Norfolk Southern combination will change that, enabling seamless, single-line service that removes handoffs, shortens transit times and lowers costs that will flow through to consumer prices, making American goods more affordable.

Vena also reaffirmed the jobs for life commitment for union workers and continued workforce growth — all to support of a stronger, more efficient supply chain.

When Locomotive Engineer Ron Steinhart asked for a photo in his office, CEO Jim Vena didn’t hesitate to grant the 50-year honoree’s request. The result: a “CEO for the Day” moment celebrating five decades of dedication, surrounded by his fellow Operating honorees – complete with a custom nameplate Steinhart carried with him from California.
