CEO Jim Vena underscored Chicago’s central role in the nation’s freight network at the 118th Annual Chicago Traffic Club Dinner, where nearly $3 trillion in goods and 25% of U.S. freight trains move through the region each year.
Vena compared today’s U.S. rail network to a cross-country flight with no nonstop option — forced to stop at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, then buy a separate ticket departing Midway to finish the trip.
The Union Pacific– Norfolk Southern combination will change that, enabling seamless, single-line service that removes handoffs, shortens transit times and lowers costs that will flow through to consumer prices, making American goods more affordable.
Vena also reaffirmed the jobs for life commitment for union workers and continued workforce growth — all to support of a stronger, more efficient supply chain.
