Historic Route 20: Railroads, the Industrial Age, and the March Westward 
The story of U.S. Route 20 is deeply intertwined with the transformative power of railroads during America’s Industrial Age. As the nation expanded westward in the 19th century, railroads revolutionized transportation, enabling faster, cheaper, and higher-volume movement of goods, people, and ideas than wagons, stagecoaches, or canals could ever achieve. This infrastructure boom not only connected distant markets but also spurred the rapid growth of communities along the lines. Many early auto routes, including what became Route 20, later followed these railroad corridors for practical reasons: established paths through challenging terrain, existing bridges and grades, economic hubs, and surveyed rights-of-way that minimized construction costs. Route 20, the longest U.S. highway (over 3,300 miles from Boston, Massachusetts, to Newport, Oregon), traces echoes of this railroad legacy across New England, the Midwest, the Great Plains, and beyond. 
The Eastern Foundations: Overcoming the Appalachians
In the early 19th century, Boston faced economic pressure from New York’s Erie Canal, which funneled western trade through the Hudson River. To compete, Massachusetts investors pushed for a railroad linking Boston to Albany, New York. The Western Railroad (later part of the Boston and Albany) became a pioneering feat: the first railroad to cross a major mountain range in the U.S., tackling the rugged Berkshire Hills and Appalachians in western Massachusetts.

Engineer George Washington Whistler (father of artist James McNeill Whistler), a West Point graduate with experience on projects like the Baltimore & Ohio, led the effort. Construction in the 1830s–early 1840s required innovative engineering through steep grades and river gorges. Whistler oversaw the building of a series of remarkable Keystone Arch Bridges—massive mortarless stone structures, some nearly 70 feet high—along the Westfield River valley. These “American cathedrals” (including notable ones in Chester, Middlefield, and Becket) still stand today as National Historic Landmarks. The main depot was in Chester, MA. Completed around 1841, the line proved that adhesion-based steam locomotives could conquer mountains without racks or cables, setting a precedent for transcontinental ambitions. 
US 20 today parallels much of this historic rail corridor through the Westfield River valley from Chester to Westfield, descending into the Connecticut River valley—offering modern travelers glimpses of the same dramatic landscapes that challenged 19th-century engineers.

The Erie Canal, Great Lakes Ports, and Midwest Expansion
West of the mountains, the Erie Canal (completed 1825) had already boomed communities across New York, turning towns into trade hubs. Route 20 precursors, like turnpikes (e.g., the Cherry Valley Turnpike), followed settler paths and Native trails, later formalized as the Great Western Turnpike. Railroads amplified this: lines connected industrial ports such as Buffalo, Erie (PA), Cleveland, Toledo, and Michigan City to Chicago, facilitating grain, lumber, ore, and manufactured goods. These corridors became arteries of the Industrial Revolution. 
In the Midwest, early roads and auto trails (like the Grant Highway or Atlantic Yellowstone Pacific) often hugged rail lines for alignment. Route 20’s path through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois reflects this, linking growing lake ports and prairie settlements. 
The Illinois Central Railroad: “Main Line of Mid-America”
The Illinois Central Railroad (IC) was a landmark project. Chartered in 1851 as the first federal land-grant railroad, it received nearly 2.6 million acres to build a north-south trunk from Cairo (at the Ohio-Mississippi confluence) to Galena in northwest Illinois, with a branch to Chicago. Completed in 1856, it was then the world’s longest railroad. IC executives and agents actively founded dozens of new towns along the route, promoting European immigration and settlement to create customers and traffic. 
This “colonization work” was deliberate: railroads needed population density for profitability. The IC’s Chicago branch accelerated that city’s rise as a rail hub, linking the Great Lakes to the Gulf. Later extensions reached west to Sioux City, Iowa. 
Route 20 in Illinois (historically the Grant Highway or AYP) runs roughly parallel or near IC alignments in places, especially as it heads toward the Mississippi and Dubuque, capitalizing on the economic spine the railroad created.

Iowa: Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad and the Hawkeye Highway
Westward, the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad (incorporated 1860 after reorganizing the earlier Dubuque and Pacific) extended IC influence across Iowa. It reached Cedar Falls by 1861 and eventually Sioux City. Construction was challenging on the prairie but transformative: the “dragged road” (early graded path) was built near the tracks around 1910. This evolved into the U.S. Grant Highway (1916) and Hawkeye Highway (1917), directly influencing the alignment that became US 20 in 1926. 
As tracks advanced, “railroad towns” sprang up rapidly. Depots became focal points; merchants, hotels, grain elevators, and stockyards followed. Speculators platted townsites every few miles, often naming them after railroad officials (e.g., Jesup, IA, tied to financier Morris K. Jesup). The railroad brought mail, supplies, markets for crops/livestock, and newcomers, turning isolated claims into bustling communities. Sioux City boomed as a meatpacking and rail gateway.

Historic Route 20 in Iowa (Dubuque to Sioux City) closely shadows this corridor, with segments like the old alignment through towns preserving the pre-interstate feel. It was often gravel into the mid-20th century. 
Nebraska and Beyond: Sioux City & Pacific, Chicago & North Western’s “Cowboy Line”
In Nebraska, the Sioux City and Pacific Railroad (chartered 1864) connected Sioux City, IA, to the Union Pacific mainline at Fremont, NE, aiding transcontinental traffic. It was later absorbed by the Chicago and North Western (C&NW). The C&NW’s broader network, including the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley, pushed westward. The “Cowboy Line” (or Lander Line) became iconic, extending deep into Wyoming. 
Towns again boomed along the advancing rails. Construction crews, followed by settlers, established depots, section houses, and sidings. Names reflected executives, investors, or whims (alphabetical schemes or personal honors were common). The railroad dictated town locations, spacing (often 8–10 miles for water/coal stops), and layouts—frequently with a central depot, grid streets, and a park square. 
US 20 in Nebraska and westward followed these paths where feasible, benefiting from surveyed grades, river crossings, and economic nodes. In places, it parallels the old Cowboy Line segments (now partly rail-trails). The highway’s designation in 1926 formalized auto travel along these historic corridors, initially as gravel or rudimentary roads improved from “dragged” paths. 
The Broader Story: Railroads Shape Route 20
Across its length, Route 20 embodies the transition from rail dominance to the auto age. Railroads laid the groundwork—conquering mountains, spanning plains, founding towns, and naming landscapes—while early 20th-century highways like the precursors to Route 20 provided flexible, door-to-door access. Many alignments hugged rail lines for topography and commerce. As interstates later bypassed towns, “Historic Route 20” efforts preserve the original 1926 paths, celebrating small-town America born from the Iron Horse. 
From Whistler’s arches in Massachusetts to prairie depots in Iowa and Nebraska, Route 20 tells a story of engineering ambition, economic integration, and community-building. It carried the nation westward, turning wilderness into connected heartland, with railroads as the indispensable backbone. Travelers today can still see the legacy: stone bridges, old depots, grain elevators, and thriving (or faded) railroad towns lining the way.
