If you are driving up from Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte or Elizabeth City on Saturday, you do not have to touch a tunnel.

Everybody assumes Norfolk means tunnels. It does not, not from the south. US-17 and VA-168 bring you up through Chesapeake, and I-464 north over the Berkley Bridge drops you right at the water. No HRBT. No sitting in a tube behind a stopped box truck with a ship to catch.

Our garage sits right on that route at 1377 Bells Mill Rd.

The single most useful thing you can pack for a Carnival cabin, and almost nobody does it:

A regular, non-surge power strip.

Cruise cabins famously have about two outlets, both behind the desk, both already fighting over your phone. A basic power strip fixes your entire week. But it has to be non-surge. Surge protectors get taken at the gangway, every time, no exceptions.

Save this one. You will thank yourself at 11pm on day one when three phones need charging.
