Give them their first flight.

Tomorrow, registration opens for free Young Eagles flights at Airport Day.

Youth ages 8–17 will meet the pilot, go through a quick pre-flight briefing, and take off for a real flight; something most kids never get the chance to do.

These spots go fast.

Madras Municipal Airport supports more than day-to-day aviation.

During fire season and other emergency operations, the airport helps serve as a base for aircraft and crews working to support response efforts across the region.

It’s one more example of the airport’s role as a working airport- serving aviation, public safety, and the broader community.

In 1943, Madras made its way onto the military map.

What became known as the Madras Army Airfield was built to support World War II combat training, including B-17 “Flying Fortress” bomber crews with the 318th Squadron of the 88th Bombing Group.

At the time, Madras had a population of just over 400. The rapid arrival of pilots, officers, and construction crews transformed the community almost overnight, bringing new activity, shared spaces, and a spirit of cooperation between military personnel and local residents.

By 1944, the mission shifted from flight training to aircraft maintenance, and by the end of the war, operations at the base came to a close.

In 1947, the airfield was transferred to local control; laying the foundation for what is now the Madras Municipal Airport.

Oregon State Police pilots visited the Madras Municipal Airport this week. They used the airport as a meeting point and spent time getting wood-fired pizza for lunch in the airport industrial area.

The visit included a tour of the Erickson Aircraft Collection. While not currently open to the public, tours may be available for organized groups by request and advance coordination through the Airport Manager, Lorraine Martinelli.
