The short answer?
Yes.
Horses can experience states such as fear, excitement, stress, relaxation, curiosity, frustration, and comfort.
They can form social bonds and develop preferences.
Anyone who has spent enough time around horses knows they aren't all the same.
Some are naturally cautious.
Some are bold.
Some are curious about everything.
Some are affectionate.
Some would prefer you admire them from across the pasture. 😂
And some horses will absolutely let you know when they have an opinion!
Understanding emotions doesn't mean treating horses like humans.
It means understanding them as horses.
Their behavior is communication.
A change in behavior can sometimes be a clue that something physical, environmental, or emotional needs attention.
That's why knowing an individual horse matters so much.
You learn their normal.
Then you can recognize when something isn't normal.
