Today, CLT paused to honor the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and reflect on a day that forever changed our nation and the aviation industry.

At CLT, with U.S. Airspace closed, approximately 125 aircraft were grounded here and stranded passengers filled the terminal. Amid the uncertainty, Airport employees and partners stepped up to support passengers and one another.

Today’s remembrance honored those we lost, those who responded and the lasting impact of September 11. Read firsthand memories from CLT employees who were here that day: cltairport.com/news

Earlier this summer, CLT updated its Lightning Detection and Advisory Program, using a data-driven approach designed to keep Airport and airline employees safe while reducing unnecessary weather-related delays.

The changes adjust how lightning is detected around the airfield, including when ramp conditions move to red and when the all-clear is given. Learn more about how CLT monitors lightning and what the changes mean for Airport operations: bit.ly/UpdatedLightningProgram

The 145th Airlift Wing has long called the Charlotte Air National Guard Base at CLT home.

As our runways take on new designations, we marked our longstanding partnership by presenting the North Carolina Air National Guard with a retired 18L-36R runway sign — specifically, the one that faced their facilities for years.

A fitting piece of the airfield shared by CLT and the 145th, and a small reminder of the history and partnership that connects us.

Last night, CLT completed its final runway redesignation returning our oldest and original runway to a familiar designation: Runway 18-36.

When the runway opened in 1936, it was designated 18-36. In 1980 as CLT’s airfield grew, the runway became 18L-36R, a designation it carried for the next 46 years.

Now, as we prepare for the opening of our Fourth Parallel Runway, it seems fitting that the runway where it all started has returned to where it started: 18-36.

09/02/2026

After more than four decades as 18L-36R, tonight the runway returns to its original designation: 18-36.

1935-36: Runway construction underway.

1938: Runways 18-36 & 04-22 (later 05-23) commissioned.

1980: Left and Right were added to the 18L-36R designation after a second North-South parallel runway was built.

2026: Runway 18L-36R will be redesignated, reverting to the original 18-36.

For 20 years, the USO Charlotte Center at CLT has been a home away from home for our nation’s service members and their families.

Since opening its doors in 2006, the Center has provided a welcoming place for military travelers to rest, recharge and find support along their journey. We’re proud to celebrate two decades of service and recognize the dedicated volunteers, partners and supporters who have made that mission possible.

Happy 20th anniversary to the USO Charlotte Center, the busiest USO Airport Center worldwide! Thank you for all you do for those who serve!
