Ensuring you are operating profitable is critical to the success for any trucking company particularly if you mainly use spot market freight to move your trucks. A perspective from Overdrive Business puts a cloud over the spot market surge of 2020.

That spot market momentum, however, might be on course to stall, at least briefly, as normal freight seasonality trends and typical market cycles return and override the factors that caused that spot boom in the first place.

For starters, “capacity is coming back online,” said Jim Nicholson, vice president of operations at digital brokerage Loadsmart. That puts downward pressure on rates, with more trucks competing for loads, even though freight volumes haven’t slowed.

Secondly, he says, more stability in the market is shifting loads back to the contract market and away from the spot market, which likewise softens demand and rates in the spot market.

However, “We do expect a resurgence as we get into the second quarter,” Nicholson said. “We do expect volumes to increase, but those relying on spot volume could be in a pinch here for the next few weeks.”

More great information!!

Fuel costs account for close to 25% of all expenses in the trucking industry which is by far the BIGGEST expense. One of the major factors in fuel consumption is you guessed it....speed. A truck moving at 70 mph consumes almost 26% more fuel than one at 65 mph which is at least 55-60 gallons more diesel fuel per week!
(Almost $10,000 more per year per truck)

Schneider National is one of the top 10 largest truckload carriers in the US with over 10,000 trucks on the road. They also represent one of the most financially successful companies in the industry. They govern their trucks BELOW 65 mph to save on fuel costs and also to promote safe driving.

The moral of the story, slow your trucks down for a couple of reasons.

1.) It’s safer. Most small fleets have drivers that are inexperienced and an 80,000 vehicle moving down the highway at 70mph is a risk.
2.) Save fuel costs. This means more money to the bottom line and allows you to scale quicker.
3.) As a company owner, safety should be your culture. We hear some of the most ridiculous excuses “the driver says he doesn’t want to be passed so much or it’s hard to merge in traffic, or it’s hard to make appointment times.” All poor reasons and the professional driver plans accordingly.
4.) And most importantly....THINK like a mega carrier and you will one day BE a mega carrier✊🏾
