PORT UPDATE : Here's a couple of quick updates for you. We've been hearing lots of rumors - thanks to everyone for keeping our group updated. I think the note just below sums up what we've been hearing and the bottom note contains 2 short news videos on the situation. The first one was particularly good - the second one will only launch on Apple products.
Have a good weekend and keep your fingers crossed......

We have been told by several sources that the federal mediator is leaving the negotiation table due to the ‘great divide and apparent unwillingness of each side to move toward a middle-ground solution’ ... it is unclear what the next step might be for the FMCS office (ie: assign a new mediator, step away from the negotiations until both sides are closer to finalizing a deal, etc.) at this time.
Understanding that many of you are hearing that a lockout and/or strike is going to happen around the end of this week/beginning of next week … we have been hearing the same and that it is the only obvious next step – this said, neither side seems to want to be the one that forces the action.
We have been told that the ILWU had their strike authorization vote about 6-8 weeks ago and the ILWU leadership is clear to go this route if decided … we believe some of the recent ILWU meetings that have established ‘Strike Captains’ and assigned general ILWU members to a Captain’s group is what is fueling a lot of the increased speculation.
We will continue to monitor the situation.

National news, last night focused on the import side of the equation; the export side is, if anything, even more dire. Companies are going out of business, missing the sales season entirely, and customers are cancelling orders.
The only positive is that, finally, this 7-month-old dispute is reaching public consciousness. We are working on Congressional hearings, to draw attention to the situation. Visits to the White House have yet to generate more than “we’re actively monitoring”, but another letter will be delivered today.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service mediator that was invited in by the two parties, has now had to step back out, as the ILWU (longshoremen) and PMA (the terminal operators who employ of the longshoremen) resume trading public attacks. Meanwhile, work slowdowns and walk off’s by the ILWU continue. The terminals are at gridlock.
