Weiss Lake up at Centre in Cherokee County calls itself the Crappie Capital of the World, and it has the fishing to back the claim up. When the Coosa River was dammed here it flooded thousands of acres of timber, and all that drowned wood became perfect structure for crappie to hold on.
Before daylight the boats are already out, drifting among the standing cypress and the old submerged treetops, jig poles working slow through the brush. Anglers come from all over the Southeast for the spring run, when a good day can fill a cooler with slab crappie the size of your hand.
The lake sits right where the Coosa crosses out of Georgia, ringed by low hardwood shores, with the water flat and still and pink at dawn.
Alabama is stitched together by rivers, and the rivers built lakes, and the lakes feed the whole state.
