I almost forgot!! Happy National Donut Day! 🍩 But can we talk about what Europe has been doing with fried dough for CENTURIES? 😏
It may be a little late for donuts (no, who am I kidding 😉), but as you are admiring your donut, just know that Europe has been in their era of delicious fried pastry perfection long before the donut shop opened on the corner.
Let me explain…..
🇦🇹 Austria — Krapfen
Fluffy, deep-fried, and filled with apricot jam. Vienna has been perfecting these since the 1600s. Your local donut shop could never.
🇮🇹 Italy — Zeppole & Bomboloni
Italy gives you TWO options. Zeppole are light, airy, dusted in powdered sugar and bomboloni are pillowy rounds stuffed with custard or Nutella. Either way — you win!
🇫🇷 France — Beignets
Straight from the streets of Paris — hot, golden, buried in powdered sugar, best eaten while walking along the Seine pretending you live there. 🥐
🇩🇪 Germany — Berliner
A jam-filled fried doughnut so iconic that JFK famously (and incorrectly) claimed to be one in his Berlin speech. History AND pastry. Oui. 🎤
🇵🇹 Portugal — Malasadas
Golden, sugar-rolled, and dangerously addictive. One bite and you’ll be booking flights to Lisbon immediately. We accept no liability. 😉
🇬🇷 Greece — Loukoumades
Tiny golden honey-drizzled dough balls that Greeks have been making since ancient times. Literally the OG donut.…respect the origin story. 🍯
The moral of this story?
Europe doesn’t just have history, castles, and river cruises.
It has carbs! Glorious, magnificent, life-changing carbs! And I happen to know exactly how to get you to every single one of these. 😄
