🚑 EMS IS CHANGING — AND THAT’S A GOOD THING.

For decades, EMS has been associated with one thing: responding when someone calls 911.

Today, our profession is capable of much more.

Gov. Henry McMaster proclaimed Oct. 4-10, 2026 as Mobile Integrated Healthcare Professionals Week to recognize the professionals and healthcare partners advancing this work across South Carolina.

Mobile Integrated Healthcare and Community Paramedicine allow EMS professionals to use their skills beyond the traditional emergency response. Sometimes the best care isn’t another ambulance ride or another visit to the ER. Sometimes it’s helping someone manage their health before it becomes an emergency, identifying what’s standing between a patient and the care they need, or connecting them with resources that can keep them healthier at home.

That’s a different way of thinking about EMS — not just responding to emergencies, but helping prevent them.

At First Priority, we’re proud to recognize the EMS professionals and healthcare partners across South Carolina who are helping move our profession forward and finding better ways to care for the people who depend on us.

The future of EMS reaches far beyond the ambulance.

When a large emergency happens, the need for support extends beyond the scene. Local EMS teams may also need to maintain 911 coverage while nearby hospitals prepare to receive patients.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, a request for EMS Mobilization brought regional support to a mass casualty incident on I-95 near mile marker 100 in the Orangeburg-Clarendon area. Additional resources supported the scene, supplemented county 911 coverage and assisted area hospitals with ongoing triage and patient management.

That coordination helps connect resources across the emergency care system so support can reach patients at the scene, in the community and at area hospitals.

We’re grateful to Orangeburg County EMS, Clarendon County EMS, Calhoun County EMS, Berkeley County EMS, Charleston County EMS, Florence County EMS, First Choice Ambulance, Jasper County Fire Rescue, Colleton County Fire Rescue, Clarendon County Fire Rescue, LifeNet 3 and First Priority Mobile Healthcare for their support during the response.

Today, our crews responded to support Orangeburg County EMS as their resources were fully committed to managing a major incident on I‑95. When neighboring agencies face overwhelming demand, we don’t hesitate—we step forward; we mobilize, and we serve.

This is what being part of the EMS family means. It’s partnership. It’s readiness. It’s answering the call even when it wasn’t ours to begin with.
