You can look back on the days when cabooses were common on railroads across North Am

erica. In the early days of railroading, each crew was assigned its own caboose, which served as home for days at a time. They could watch the cars ahead, sleep, cook and eat their meals. It was a place where the conductor and rear brakeman would do their paperwork.
