🇺🇸 Friday Focus: The Bicentennial Kenworth 🇺🇸
As America turned 200 in 1976, Kenworth marked the occasion with a limited-run Bicentennial V.I.T. edition W900A—built for the Very Important Trucker with patriotic pride from bumper to bunk.
Trimmed with factory red, white, and blue striping, each truck featured a commemorative Liberty Bell dash plaque reading: “This KENWORTH especially constructed in tribute to America’s 200th Birthdate 1976.” Inside, drivers found a bold red, white, and blue interior, complete with blue-and-white carpeting, a white padded headliner, and deluxe trim.
Part of Kenworth's “Very Important Trucker” series, W900As were assembled at Kenworth’s Renton, WA plant, and all K100Cs at the now-closed Kansas City, MO facility. In the months leading up to July 1976, Kenworth paused customer and dealer orders and dedicated both plants entirely to Bicentennial production, ensuring trucks would be delivered to dealerships in time for Independence Day parades and celebrations across the country.
One of the key highlights of the VIT‑200 package was the brand-new Aerodyne sleeper—North America’s first factory-produced raised-roof sleeper cab—complete with twin skylight windows and increased headroom (about 7 feet), twin beds, and added storage space.
More than a showpiece, the Bicentennial V.I.T. was a carefully orchestrated celebration of American craftsmanship, trucking pride, and the independent spirit of the owner-operator.
From all of us at ATHS, have a happy and safe Fourth of July!
