Walmart’s plan to overthrow Amazon as the king of shipping is being played out perfectly. Walmart operates over 150 distribution centers across America. Each is over 1 million square feet.

It also runs 4,789 stores in 49 states. Walmart’s footprint is so big that 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store.

Walmart is using its physical stores and warehouses for online sales. Since the stores are already turning a profit from grocery sales, maintaining extra warehouse space adds little to no costs. Via: Forbes

That means Walmart will soon have the biggest and most effective “shipping network” in America. By the end of the year, Walmart plans to deliver stuff from 1,600 stores. For comparison, Amazon has only 110 warehouses across the US. Walmart's housing products in local stores will provide cheaper and more efficient shipping.

Most important, Walmart will pull this off at relatively little cost. In comparison Amazon’s shipping cost has risen by 710% over the past decade, they are expected to spend $11 billion on shipping this quarter that’s more than it spent in an entire year four years ago. The shipping cost is causing massive problems for Amazon and people are starting to realizing it. Since last March Walmart’s stock has beaten Amazon’s by 30%.

This is a scary situation to be in. Fog or any other weather situation should be a clear indication of slowing down.
