The Gateway to the County: A Look Back at Caribou Municipal Airport (CAR)

Did you know that Caribou Municipal Airport (CAR) has been a vital link for Northern Maine for nearly a century? From its early days of grass runways to its role in the "Golden Age" of aviation, our local airport has a story worth sharing! 🌲✈️

🕒 Quick History Flight Path:

• The Early Days (1920s-30s): Aviation in Caribou took flight as local pilots sought a reliable landing strip in the heart of Aroostook County. It quickly became a hub for agricultural transport and local travel.

• The War Effort: Like many regional airports, Caribou played its part during the mid-20th century, supporting local civil defense and serving as a key waypoint for pilots navigating the vast North Country.

• Commercial Connection: For years, Caribou was a stop for regional carriers (like Northeast Airlines), connecting "The County" directly to the rest of New England and beyond.

• The Modern Era: Today, CAR serves as a critical asset for general aviation, emergency medical services (LifeFlight), and supporting our local economy.

🌟 Why It Matters Today
While the planes have changed, the mission hasn't. Whether it’s bringing in business leaders, supporting our local farmers, or providing a base for emergency services, the airport remains a symbol of Caribou’s connection to the world.
