Birding By Boat on the Osprey

So you never know what's going to happen on a cruise on the Osprey. We were a little late coming back in after spending some extra time checking out some rails. While passing our favorite osprey nest we noticed a bird in the water. One of the chicks had somehow ended up in the water. This bird had fledged but something must have gone wrong. We fished her out of the water with a net. Fortunately she was cooperative and hung on for the ride. Brought her into the cabin and gave her a quick check. Everything seemed to be okay other than that she was totally soaked. Decided it was best to put her back into the nest where Mom was waiting with her two siblings.
This is a video of putting her back in the nest. Photos were in a previous post.

Save the Most Important Fish in the Sea | The Public Trust Project

Another group of animals depending on menahaden, or bunker, are the Cetaceans. Whales and dolphins feed on menhanden in our mid-Atlantic waters such as Cape May. Not trying to deny commercial harvesting a livelyhood, there is economic value in making sure we strike a balance. In the Cape May area there is an industry in marina mammal observation. The link is an interesting read regardless of your opinion. Capt. David

The Menhaden is a small forage fish whose significance to our planet is remarkably disproportionate to its tiny size. Known as “the most important fish in the sea,” menhaden filter our waters and provide forage for the majority of the fish species that flourish along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Just back from a wonderful cruise. Just 15 on the boat with plenty of room for social distancing. Bob was an excellent skipper with a wealth of knowledge about birds and the local area. Highly recommend OspreyCruise. Note, it’s not OspreyCruises.
