Algae Build-Up in Fuel Tanks — Why It Happens & Why It Must Be Cleaned

First — it’s not actually algae.
What most people call “algae” in fuel tanks is microbial growth (bacteria and fungi). These microbes live at the fuel-water boundary inside your tank.

Why It Happens
• Water contamination from condensation, rain, or bad fuel
• Ethanol fuel attracts moisture
• Warm temperatures (very common in boats)
