Here's another non-climactic video. This is an RCA deluxe record changer. Note the clear headshell and the aluminum button on top. These have some sort of proprietary cartridge that only works with specific RCA units, and I have no way to test the audio. The good news is that all that have come through here, the owner reported worked just fine. Of note, the driver in the cartridge was missing but I managed to find one from another cartridge and get it installed without too much trouble.
I think the slider on it was also slightly bent, so I replaced it with one from a parts unit.

Just a quick placeholder video. This demo went out to the owner of this which I have put off for a week or so because I wanted to clear a whole day for it. You never know what you're gonna run into with one of these.
Required motor mounts, new cartridge and tonearm wiring. EV cartridge was toast; replaced with a Tetrad. Still have to glue the platter mat and trim ring down. Despite the fact that it looks like it's functioning OK, it needs a new idler. It'll get through a change cycle at 45 but not at 33, and it's getting noisy. The upper part is still soft, but the lower part is hard as a rock.

A nice break from the Magnavox. This fabulous (I think 1957) RCA 205 came in from our friend Douglas in Salt Lake City. Previous work had been done. Not up to s***f though. At some point a stereo cartridge was put in but a very low compliance early model. We replaced that and the stiff tonearm wire cable. Amazingly enough the turrets and the idler are quite good on this. We made a few tweaks to the end of record trip to allow for a bit lighter tracking than the 10 g these originally did. Now, that seems high, original mono records were designed for up to 12 g. RCA, Zenith, and Motorola were all using very heavy cast arms.
I think MCA records had a heavy promotional push on this guy, but this is the only song of his I remember ever making it anywhere. I think maybe they thought he was gonna be the next Don Henley.

Magnavox. New platter mat and trim ring. New Tetrad cartridge + wiring. Yada yada yada.
Paul Mauriat & his Orchestra were popular for their catchy and energetic instrumental renditions of popular songs. Probably best known for their version of "Love is Blue," here's a little gem some of you might recognize.

Easter egg for readers:
Believe it or not, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was indeed a real racing car, rebuilt several times. The derivable car in the movie was built on a small vintage Ford truck chassis.
Much like Herbie, Chitty doesn't take any s**t from anyone, especially when it comes to those he loves.

Well here's something new. Remember this one from like a week or so ago? I think it's our first abandoned changer. Owner promised to pay twice and now has disabled his Facebook account. Although it never hurts to have a spare changer on the shelves, I do believe I have a working Magnavox, slightly newer, probably 1965 with the larger platter.
I'm wondering if I should sell this bad boy. It looks great, and works fantastically. Completely serviced, new cartridge and tonearm wiring. This was a complete teardown and it's ready to rock for at least another 25 years.
Trying to decide if I wanna offer it up for sale here first and if no takers, possibly throw it up on eBay. It's a fabulous performer.
Here's the original post on it if you want to look further: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1LTEj5A2zR/?mibextid=wwXIfr
It's in our packing/FAQ .pdf that changers left after 10 days unpaid may be sold. Only because I've been getting people who ask if they can pay over time or whatever. I'm not really running a layaway, and being three or four weeks out on shipping labels, people have to save their money and they know it's coming. BUT, I've always been willing to work with people; but don't just close your Facebook account. Obviously I do have his address and I suppose I could send a letter but I think the writing is on the wall. Maybe the bill was higher than he expected.
I'll go through his messages one more time to see if I have a phone number but I'm not gonna play games with my valuable time and parts.

Revenge of the Magnavox. This unit apparently sat unused for quite a long time. We did the standard cleanup and found the main gear sticky and some other small issues, but had it working just great.… for a while. Magnavox are known for having motor issues. I started getting fluctuation and then the motor slowed down. Motor had been properly lubricated and the rotor was spinning freely, but then I checked the motor and it was burning hot. The windings must have broken down over the years. So we are on the hunt for a new motor. This is the nature of antiques sometimes.
I loved this single by Julian Lennon. Took me YEARS to locate a copy as I didn't know the title. There's even a track on the album titled "Well I Don't Know," which is a LYRIC in this song ("Say You're Wrong")! I think I even picked up the album used and tried that track and was disappointed and never listened to the whole thing. Heard it while listening to a college video music channel maybe 10 years ago, found a copy at Amoeba Records in San Francisco that day.

For those following along and visitors to the pages ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/403668949816710 and https://www.facebook.com/groups/298859150323927 ), you may recall that 1968 models often suffer from a platter mat that is leaching oily plasticizer and may have turned hard and crusty, cracked, or curled up at the edges. We've tried a few different solutions but I think I finally landed on one I really like.
I've been using various mats from VM because diameter is just perfect, and they are available with various trim rings, however you do have to cut the center section out as there is a protrusion on the bottom specific to VMs platter, so we end up cutting a bunch of the center out and exposing the original Magnavox platter. I paint that with textured rubberized undercoating and it does a pretty good job of blending in, but we found a new mat and ring that fits over a good portion of that. Of course you can't take shortcuts mechanically, but cosmetically we sometimes have to use what we can find. You can't put a flat mat on these or the 45 adapter won't fit. I think this is the best solution so far, so I'm gonna find out just how much stock there is.

Sorry kids, just a lot of coming in.
This one got a full cleaning and lubrication, plus a new cartridge and tonearm wiring.
Daryl Hall and John Oates certainly had no trouble making hit record after hit record for about 10 years. This one never really tripped my trigger but I've grown to like it more and more over the years.

A very mixed bag of stuff from VM. Gary is no spring chicken and looking to start downsizing some of the peripheral stuff he's collected over the last 40 years. When I arrived he already had quite a few things set aside for me, a real mixed bag but there's definitely some treasure in there. I didn't photograph each box, but it's a pretty good sample. Not shown is three or four boxes of NOS or good salvaged motors. Scroll through the photos for more details.
