Today, Sham El-Nessim is celebrated throughout Egypt. This ancient tradition, originally called Shemu, was a sacred festival that marks the arrival of spring and the start of the agricultural harvest, dating back to at least 2700 BCE. It symbolized renewal, fertility, and rebirth, aligning with the spring equinox, when the sun was believed to align with the Great Pyramid. In modern Egypt, Sham El-Nessim falls on Easter Monday of the Coptic Orthodox Church, which is based on the Julian calendar. Families of all faiths gather in parks and outdoors for picnics and walks to welcome the warmer weather. Celebrations traditionally involve salted fish (fisikh) and colored eggs. Egypt is a country rich in continuity from its past to the present!

According to the Institute for Economics & Peace, Egypt has been officially recognized as the most improved country in the world on the 2025 Global Peace Index, climbing 38 places over the last decade — from 145th in 2014 to 107th in 2025. This major leap reflects real progress in safety, security, and stability across the country, with improvements in crime control, personal safety at night, and reductions in violent demonstrations and terror indicators.

Planning a trip to Europe?
Important new requirement for non-EU passport holders.
The EU has a new entry and exit requirement. The new Entry/Exit System (EES) is a digital border system that began being implemented on October 12, 2025, and is scheduled to be fully operational on April 10, 2026. Automatic digital recording of facial images and fingerprints replaces manual passport stamping for non-EU travelers, applicable across 29 European countries. Currently, several airports are reporting long lines due to the new procedure. To reduce delays, a Travel to Europe mobile app is being introduced to allow travelers to submit data, such as facial images and passport details, ahead of arrival. See link for app in comments. To clarify, the App currently is only available in Sweden and Portugal. But more countries will be added. The site below is an official European Union site.
