Patricia MacLachlan, the beloved author of "Sarah, Plain and Tall" and more than sixty other books for children, died last week at the age of 84. Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1938 and raised in Minnesota, MacLachlan first began writing in her mid-30s after her three children had started school. Many of her books focused on themes of family and place including her most acclaimed book, "Sarah, Plain and Tall," which won the 1986 Newbery Medal, the highest honor in children's literature. When she received a National Humanties Medal in 2002, MacLachlan spoke of her love of writing for children because of their openness: “Children read with a certain belief and vision about finding themselves in literature. Literature changes their lives. They have a sense of closeness with literature that speaks for them."
