There's a checklist behind every lodge we put on an itinerary, and it has nothing to do with thread count.

Fair wages. No history of inhumane practices. A wildlife-welfare standard. Anti-poaching support. No single-use plastics.

And a real preference for community ownership, not just community-adjacent marketing.

All of these places clear it. Places where the ownership structure means the benefit of you being there actually reaches the people whose land it's on.

Did you know there is a country charging every visitor $100 per night just to be there?

But this isn't a velvet-rope luxury tax.

Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee funds free healthcare, free education, trail maintenance, and training for the people who work in its tourism industry, plus carbon-offset planting.

The government's own name for the approach is "High Value, Low Volume": fewer visitors, priced to support the place and the people in it.

It's the same principle we've built Elevate around for two decades.

But this was arrived at independently by a national government with the leverage to actually legislate it.

For World Tourism Day, here's a secret about sustainable travel.

The months everyone tells you to avoid are the ones we'd recommend.

Because green season isn't the compromise version of a trip.

It's when green sea turtles nest in Costa Rica, when Namibia fills with migratory birds, when Thailand's waterfalls are at full force, and when Australia’s Daintree rainforest comes into new growth.

It also spreads travel across the year, so guides, conservation projects and local communities earn for twelve months rather than six, and the pressure comes off the destinations in their busiest weeks.

The part that's hard to explain until you've done it: in high season, you share the sighting. In these months, you don't.

One month, two stories, where Dominique shares her expertise to answer the question: what does travel done right actually look like?

In a Forbes piece, writer Emese Maczko covers how Loreto, San Ignacio Lagoon, and Todos Santos are choosing conservation over unchecked growth. Dominique's take: "Loreto's future is tied directly to protecting this area - the local tourism economy depends on those species thriving." The piece also traces how fishermen, conservationists, tour operators, and residents fought off a plan to open the Sea of Cortez's UNESCO waters to large-scale ship traffic. And won.

Then Stacey Leasca asked five travel experts to name the world's most underrated destination for Travel + Leisure. Dominique's pick? Panama. "In just a few days, you go from a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital to remote islands with wildlife-rich rainforests," she shared. "One of the most rewarding, compact itineraries in the Americas."

Nonprofits don't run donor trips for the scenery. They run them because of what happens afterward.

It is much harder to walk away from a cause once you have stood in the place where your money is doing its work and met the people it serves.

That isn't sentiment; it's donor retention. Donors who travel to see the work tend to stay - and give more - for longer.

In a year when public funding has contracted sharply, keeping the supporters you already have is worth more than finding new ones.

We've designed donor travel for nonprofits, foundations and universities since 2005: field visits, learning journeys and philanthropic travel across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Sick of travel marketing tropes? Same. So here's a new series - the places where they're actually true.

First: "an architectural masterpiece."

Aït Ben Haddou sits in the Ounila Valley in southern Morocco, in the foothills of the High Atlas, on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech.

Clay brick, earth and wood. Houses, small fortresses with brick patterning cut into them, a mosque, a caravanserai, grain-threshing floors and two cemeteries, all inside one set of walls.

UNESCO-listed in 1987, it's still preserved using traditional clay, straw, and timber techniques by the few local families still living inside the historic ksar.

This is a real example of architecture at its finest.

The people who live closest to the world's great places are often the ones who have never been.

Living near something isn't the same as being able to go, and it is often the young people on the doorstep who are last through the gate.

The most famous list in safari travel was written by people who wanted to shoot them.

The Big Five was a hunting term - the five animals considered hardest to kill on foot. It's been sold as a wildlife checklist ever since.

They're still worth seeing. So are these five, but almost nobody asks for them.
