🏆 Balchen/Post Award honorable mention! 🏆
During this year's International Aviation Snow Symposium - Buffalo, our crews here at BUF were recognized "for outstanding achievement in airport snow and ice control." 🧊❄️
The Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s Airfield Department not only kept the airport open during some of the most grueling winter conditions, but did so with unfaltering excellence — earning widespread recognition from passengers, local media, and congressional representatives alike. 👏
Throughout the season, the Airfield Department demonstrated exemplary commitment — training new staff, overcoming supply chain obstacles, and working extraordinary hours without hesitation. Their tireless efforts meant that, despite the unrelenting onslaught of winter, the airport closed for only twenty minutes all season—a feat that sets a new standard for operational excellence. ☃️
Remarkably, this brief closure is almost inconsequential given the unrelenting barrage of snow faced this season. Buffalo endured 88.3 inches of snowfall—impressive in quantity, but even more remarkable in its persistence. The airport experienced 60 days of measurable snowfall, including eight consecutive days, and the longest reprieve between events was just over a week in November. Through it all, the Airfield Department’s crews rose to every challenge. 💪
