Precision is everything when it comes to 722. One of the most intensive phases of the frame restoration involved the complete overhaul of the running gear and side rod bushings. Each bushing was precision-turned to achieve a seamless fit against the new drive wheel pins, expertly pressed into the rods, and secured.

With Southern No. 722’s boiler now securely back on its frame, we’ve reached one of the most significant milestones of this entire restoration. This wasn’t just a simple lift; it was the culmination of months of meticulous prep work, ensuring every mount, bolt hole, and alignment point was perfect before the two massive components met.

This carefully planned and executed step represents months of preparation and skilled craftsmanship, bringing the locomotive one step closer to operating again in the Smoky Mountains. Seeing the boiler and frame reunited isn’t just a technical win; it reflects our ongoing commitment to preserving railroad history and keeping the tradition of steam railroading alive for future generations.

In April 2025, the GSMR Steam Shop hit a milestone years in the making: 722’s frame was finally back on its wheels.

After months of grueling frame repairs, precision machining in Pennsylvania, and endless hours of prep work in Dillsboro, the moment finally arrived. Using the overhead crane, the team carefully lowered the restored frame back onto the driving wheels.

For the first time since the early 2000s, the engine is no longer sitting on blocks—it’s standing together as one complete unit. There is still plenty of work ahead, but seeing the 722 back on its ā€œfeetā€ was a massive win for the crew and a huge step toward its return to the rails. āš™ļøšŸ”„

Between November 2023 and May 2024, the GSMR Steam Shop focused on the engine’s foundation. To ensure the 722 could handle the stress of mountain grades, the team sandblasted the entire frame down to bare metal. This allowed them to locate and weld every hidden crack and worn spot that had developed over decades of use. They even applied a specialized heat treatment to the metal, strengthening the frame to handle the heavy work ahead.

By May 2024, the focus shifted to the cylinders. After years of the engine sitting outside, the team faced a massive challenge: removing seized covers and broken bolts. It was a grueling process of drilling and retapping, but once the old hardware was cleared, every hole was fitted with brand-new studs. This cleared the way for the precision boring process to begin, ensuring the cylinders were perfectly smooth and ready for steam once again. āš™ļøšŸ”„

While the boiler and driving wheels were at Strasburg, the focus was on heavy-duty restoration and precision. This wasn’t just a quick fix; it was a comprehensive overhaul of the locomotive’s most vital components to prepare them for years of service.

By flipping the boiler upside down, the team was able to perform the high-level steelwork needed for the new firebox and throat sheet with much better accuracy. At the same time, the massive driving wheels were stripped, measured, and machined. Every part that helps those wheels turn—like the drive boxes and crown brasses—was carefully fitted to make sure the engine runs smoothly and stays within strict safety limits.

Having the heart of the 722 in Pennsylvania was a massive undertaking, but it ensured the foundation was solid before the parts ever made their way back home. āš™ļøšŸ”„

By August 2023, the GSMR Steam Shop had officially taken the ā€œlegsā€ off the 722. Our team removed the massive driving wheels and the front steering parts to begin a total overhaul.

Before these wheels could be shipped out for professional machining, we spent weeks prepping them in-house. This involved stripping years of wear, smoothing out the surfaces, and carefully fitting them with brand-new components. Every inch had to be cleaned and inspected to ensure they were ready for the precision work ahead. Once the prep was finished, we loaded them up to be shipped out, ensuring every measurement was perfect for a smooth return to the rails.

In 2023, the 722 restoration reached a turning point when we said a temporary goodbye to the heart of the locomotive. The boiler was loaded up and shipped to the experts at Strasburg Rail Road Mechanical Services for its multi-year rebuild.
Sending the boiler off-site was a massive logistical feat, but it was a vital step in our mission to bring this Southern icon back to life. While our crew stayed busy in Dillsboro, the team in Pennsylvania focused on the heavy steelwork required to meet modern safety standards. This phase was all about the power of partnership—bringing together the best minds in steam to ensure the 722’s future is as bright as its past.
