The first of the "supercarriers," Forrestal (CVA-59) was launched 11 December 1954 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. sponsored by Mrs. James V. Forrestal, widow of Secretary of Defense Forrestal, and commissioned 1 October 1955, Capt. Roy L. Johnson in command. Forrestal represented more than one step in the evolutionary chain of modern carrier aviation. Besides her sheer size and weigh

t, she was the first built with an angled flight deck, which allows simultaneous takeoffs and landings. She also featured four catapults and four deck edge elevators to move aircraft from the hangar bays to the flight deck. USS Forrestal CV-59 moved from its pier at Newport R.I. on June 15, 2010
(FORRESTAL's final destination is pier 4 Philadelphia Naval Shipyard).
