Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Today we honor a man who stood for justice for all people, no matter their skin color or religious beliefs. Dr. King’s courage and leadership sparked a national movement that forced our country to face many deep injustices. Many of those issues still exist today, which makes his message just as important now as it was then.
Over time, I have grown a deep respect for Dr. King and the sacrifices he made, including ultimately giving his life. I do not believe we give him enough recognition or credit for the impact he had on this country and the world.
At a time like this, it feels especially important to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many Americans, both Black and white, who fought to make this country better for their children and grandchildren. Because of them, we are living in a world that is far better than what existed in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.
It was not that long ago that our grandparents and forefathers faced harassment, violence, and even death for simply existing with dignity. Something as basic as drinking water or moving freely could cost someone their life.
Today is a reminder to honor their struggles, respect their sacrifices, and continue pushing forward with courage, unity, and purpose.
