Why use a concrete primer before applying an epoxy floor coating?

Older or porous concrete can release air that contributes to bubbles in the coatings applied over it. Thermal-Chem #1080 ArmorPrime WB is a two-component, water-based epoxy primer and concrete sealer designed to pe*****te into small voids in the concrete substrate before for the flooring system that follows.

Why do contractors choose Thermal-Chem #1080 ArmorPrime WB?

- Helps seal older concrete and reduce outgassing
- Very low viscosity for deeper concrete pe*******on
- Fast curing for quicker turnaround
- Extremely low odor for occupied facilities
- Available in 1, 3 and 15-gallon kits
- Can be used as a durable two-coat concrete sealer

A good flooring system starts with the right preparation and the right primer.

Your crew is scheduled. Your coating system is ready.

But is your decorative flake?

Has consolidation caused an epoxy floor flake shortage?

Not necessarily. But current changes in the decorative flake market make availability something contractors should plan for earlier.

The answer isn't panic-buying. It's planning earlier:

- Confirm flake availability before scheduling
- Discuss large and custom projects early
- Confirm shipping and timing

At Thermal-Chem, we're planning purchases farther ahead, monitoring usage and reorder points, and maintaining additional inventory of commonly requested colors and blends where practical.

Our goal isn't to promise that every blend will always be available. It's to plan ahead, communicate clearly, and help contractors avoid unnecessary surprises.

One missing flake blend can put an entire flooring project on hold.

Your primer is ready.
Your base coat is ready.
Your topcoat is ready.

But if the specified decorative flake isn't available, the crew may still have to wait.

For a flooring contractor, that can mean:

A disrupted schedule.
An idle crew.
A customer waiting.

Decorative flake isn't something to figure out after the rest of the flooring system is ready. It's part of the system.

At Thermal-Chem, we encourage contractors to tell us about large projects, custom blends, and upcoming needs early so we have better visibility into upcoming demand.

Don't let one unavailable product put the entire job on hold.

Don't guess. Troubleshoot.

When bubbles, pinholes, craters, blisters, or fisheyes appear, it's easy to focus on the repair. But fixing the symptom without identifying the root cause can lead to repeat failures and costly callbacks.

That's why we created our Epoxy Floor Bubble Troubleshooting Checklist.

This free, printable resource helps you:
- Identify common epoxy floor coating defects.
- Evaluate possible causes, including outgassing, contamination, application techniques, and jobsite conditions.
- Document temperatures, timing and substrate conditions.
- Troubleshoot the problem before choosing a repair.
- Reduce unnecessary rework.

Whether you're on the jobsite or planning your next installation, it's a practical tool you'll want to keep on hand.

Think it's a bubble? Take a closer look.

If the coating pulls away from the surface instead of wetting it evenly, you're probably not looking at a bubble. You're likely looking at a fisheye.

Fisheyes in epoxy flooring are often caused by surface contamination, such as oil, grease, silicone, wax, or other residues. They may look like other coating defects, but the cause and the solution are very different.

Before recoating:

β€’ Check for cleaning chemicals and process residues.
β€’ Review your surface preparation.
β€’ Confirm the substrate is free of contamination.
β€’ Avoid introducing foreign material during application.

Taking a few extra minutes to correctly identify the root cause can help prevent unnecessary repairs and costly callbacks.

See our epoxy floor troubleshooting guide and learn how to identify common coating defects.

Blisters appearing after the floor has cured?

Don't assume they're just surface bubbles.

Delayed blistering may indicate moisture v***r, liquid intrusion, loss of adhesion, contamination, or another underlying issue. Puncturing the blister and applying another coat does not correct the cause.

Before applying another coat, take time to determine what's causing the problem.

Identifying the root cause first can help prevent repeat failures and unnecessary repairs.
