I know many of you like to see progress photos, so here are some of my current painting. I started this one by working on the pewter vessels. I did quite a few light layers, wet in wet, building up color and value. When I had those mostly completed, I used masking fluid everywhere that I needed to protect the edges from the green cloth. I also used masking on the spots of the strawberries. If you look close, you can see the masking, which is also green, in the second photo. Next came the green cloth, Which needed subtle highlights and deep shadows. This was a much easier task, having masked the strawberries and the edges of the pewter. As it requires quite a few layers to get the subtle differences between tones. After mostly completing the cloth, I removed the masking and worked on the strawberries, layering reds and purples to build depth. When I thought I had the strawberries color, right, I removed the rest of the masking and painted shadows on most of the spots. In the last photo, I have just begun to work on the table and have a couple of light layers done wet in wet.

The lovebirds were out and about in full force this year, with several pair choosing our palm tree for their nesting site. I heard a ruckus one day with bird sounds I had never heard. I went out to investigate and found a pair of rosy-faced lovebirds in our tree. They were very shy at first and immediately retreated to a hole in the upper part of the tree where I couldn't see them. After awhile, one came out and eventually the second one appeared. It turned out there were two pair in there that day, and in the next days I saw as many as 3 pair at once. In the first few days, they didn't appreciate being watched, but after that they pretty much ignored me, or they would just go around to the other side of the tree.

At last, some new watercolor artwork to show! It's not that I haven't been creating; more like I have neglected to post on this page. To see what you have missed, please have a look at my other page @ Lana Kay Minow Smith.
I normally use my own photos for reference, but if I have used someone else's I have given them credit next to each painting. These usually come from free photo sites such as Pixabay or Facebook groups like Free Reference Photos for Artists and sometimes from photographer friends.

"Dance of the Daisies"
22x12 watercolor
Sometimes it's hard to know what to do with a painting when you are near the finish but know somethings not quite right. I started this painting while taking a course on painting flowers, but we don't get critiqued until the end of the course. That's when you consider yourself really lucky to have a friend and mentor who you can turn to. Thank you again, Gaylene Fortner Studio, for giving me your valued advice.

Here is another in my series of old stuff. The buildings are somewhere in New Mexico; either on I-25 or I-40. I have seen them many times and wished we could stop for a photo, but that is usually impossible pulling a camper when there is no turn out available. It is a bland stretch of road and I was half asleep, but I grabbed my camera and managed to get two reference photos out of my window at 70mph, dodging the large mirror on the truck. I call it "Roadside Attraction" it is a 20x8 watercolor.

The time is getting close! Please pm me if you want a ticket; there is still time if you would like a chance at this beautiful collaboration from Art & Soul. It will be given away at the Studio Harvest Art Show & Sale, Courthouse Lobby in Broadus. The show starts at 10:00 and ends at 6:00. The drawing will be 5:30.
Participating artists of the collaboration are: Blondie Woolston, Sonja Harrington, Ronda Gatlin, Lana Smith, Ann Emmons, Connie Barnhart, Jan Stevens, Susan Jerke, Kate Ruland, Gaylene Fortner, and Laura Lee Ullrich. Each artist picked a section from the divided photo (taken by Jim Collins) and completed it in their chosen medium before seeing what the others were doing with their sections. The different interpretations made for a most interesting piece.

I like how these vignette paintings look framed up in my all time favorite rope edged frame. I have used this frame for so many western themed photographs and paintings and it always looks sharp. 😊

Progress photos of a commissioned watercolor painting I’m currently working on. First I rearranged the horses for a more pleasing composition. I did a little practice piece to work out my technique and colors. I started the painting with the dark horse in front, laying in a light wash of blues and purples and some bright red. I slowly layered in darker colors, building up to the darkest black. Next I did the grulla horse on the left. This horse has gorgeous tiger striped marks on his legs which didn’t show in the reference but fortunately did in the supplemental photos my client provided. The paint horse received an underpainting of all the colors used in the first two horses before the dark blues and purples were glazed on top. A little black went on in the very darkest areas. The horse on the right still needs some work; stay tuned for the finish!

I have been working on a series of landscape paintings. Some of my inspiration comes from other photographers (which I have credited below each painting); although I rarely paint the scene exactly as it looks in their photos. For instance, I might use the barn but change the landscape around it. I like to mix up my subject matter, and sometimes I don't have or can't find the subjects I feel like painting in my own vast collection of photos. I am thankful that there are so many amazing photographers out there who so generously offer their photos to artists.

New artwork; Noon Break, a 12 x 16 watercolor, is from a reference photo I took on one of the early wagon trains or maybe the Motorola Retreat. I will have to research my old negatives to find a date and location.
