The Kalamazoo & Lansing Railway

The Kalamazoo & Lansing Railway the "old" K&L is gone but there are a ton of photos. A "new" K&L will come and there will be a ton of photos. This page was created to share both.

The Kalamazoo & Lansing is my fictional Mid-Michigan railroad set in 1940 as modeled in HO scale. The layout was started in late 2008 in N scale as a Mainline Railroad. It was dismantled for a family move in late 2014. In early 2015, using sections of the old, a new layout was started. In 2021 I decided to switch to HO scale. I now model the Fair Lake Branch of the K&L.

Here is the progression of the Great Lakes Wheel Works. Basically there are 3 sub-assbelies. The L shape back walls, the more 3-D left section, and the conveyor house and conveyor. Still to go is painting the conveyor contouring and painting the foam scenery base roof pieces where needed and the as built kit smoke stack, which will be cut in half for 2 stacks as 3-D flats and loading dock roof.

Spent some time at the "No Name Central & Ann Arbor Trunk" of a friend from the Southern Michigan Railroad Society. O scale brass with sound. Mix of handlaid and sectional track. Work in progress. Thanks you Jeff & Suzi Duprey for the open house the hospitality and pizza!

The K&L Wives Auxiliary wanted another kit similar to the one just built so a trip to the hobby shop was demanded. Said kit was bought along with some trinkets for the Rail-road.
The pickup truck shown is a 1941 model granted 3 years early for current modeled date but we will get there soon. The vehicle was bought to use as a measuring tool for roads alleys and parking.
The grade crossing kits will be used on East Industrial Dr behind the gas station. Once the GLW building kit arrives that corner of Richland will be much better sceniced.

What was to be the last "major purchase" has arrived. The soon to be "Gooderham's Fuel". A long time customer of the Line Gooderham's supplies the surrounding homes and businesses with quality coal fuel oil as well as gasoline to local stations.
What turns out to be the last major purchase (any non rolling stock item over $50) is the "Champion Packing plant" which will kitbashed into flats for the Great Lakes Wheel Works. That is scheduled to arrive Tuesday. Construction on Gooderhams will wait, it is more important to get GLW done as it's a background and Gooderham's is foreground.
Also expected today are 3 additional frieght cars and a caboose is due Monday.

Big thanks to for getting the NMRA track gauge that was needed. Also picked up a replacement for the burned out MRC tech4 throttle. The late 1960s vintage MRC Golden Dual-Pack can go back in its original box to be stored. And because out of all the huge number of Walthers kits they had but not the one needed a bag of bumper posts was purchased.

I'll admit I am pleased. When initial planning was done and construction started I was not optimistic on the "Enjoyment Level" I was going to achieve by basically modeling just one town with zero "mainline" action.
But its getting there. The overall look that is coming together. The operations that are ambiguous daily and representative of action in a mid-sized Michigan city in the late 1930s, with room to grow in traffic volume as new rolling stock is acquired.
Pennies are being saved for what should be the last "back of the table" buildings to be bought. Once built and installed more finished scenery (starting in the back) can be started.

The K&L Wives Auxiliary made a snap inspection today and determined "there is a lot of water around the frieght house". Crews were immediately dispatched to commence more in depth base scenery.

Work progresses on Richland's Southside. Roads have been finalized and glued down along with the base scenery around the frieght house area. Freight house tracks have been painted. There are some areas of scenery that will be plaster simulating ground and/or turf instead of the "foam paper" used for roads etc. That project will likely start soon.
