The Wheeling Rail Transportation Rail Transporation

09/03/2026

This—is the Delray Connecting Railroad, a Wheeling property in greater Detroit on Zug Island.

While historically serving the steel industry, the DCRR has reinvented itself by diversifying the commodities it handles, whether through attracting new customers or transloading products for short-haul trucking.

With interchanges with Canadian National Railway Company, Norfolk Southern, and CSX, the Delray Connecting Railroad is well-connected! The opportunities for even more business are in motion, and the DCRR is a railroad built to handle it.

What's old is new—Wheeling & Lake Erie 1776 meets its inspiration—Norfolk & Western 1776, painted 50 years apart. Celebrating 250 years of independence is as much about where we've been as where we're headed!

Something special is going on in Spencer, North Carolina: a gathering of newly-painted locomotives from a bunch of different railroads and some surviving relics from the original 1976 photoshoot, now museum pieces.

Plenty of photo opportunities are planned through the weekend, and we hope to see you there!

This past weekend, the Union Railroad celebrated Family Days at our state-of-the-art car shop in Duquesne, PA. For a day, the facility was transformed into a fun factory with a bounce house, rock-climbing wall and bungee trampoline as a way for our employees to take their families to enjoy the lighter side of railroading.

Also in company were the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway's 1776 locomotive and URR 17 (which has a patriotic history of its own from the 1976 bicentennial). A loaded steel slab train passed by offering a brief glimpse into what a day in the life of a railroader looks like, and hibachi/ice cream food trucks on hand ensured nobody left hungry!
