The Wheeling & Lake Erie is having a hiring session on Wednesday, October 14th. You must apply first to be invited, and details will be included in the invitation.

Conductors are responsible for the action on the ground, switching cars and making up mile-long freight trains, while the engineer runs the locomotives. To learn more, go to railroadcareer.com

To wrap up See Tracks, Think Train week, here's some tips on how to prevent a tragedy when it comes to trains.

The Wheeling prioritizes safety, and railroad crossings are no exception. Railroad property is private property — that doesn't mean you can't appreciate trains, but do it from a safe distance! Railroad tracks aren't a shortcut, and in many instances, there's nowhere to go if a train comes.

Share this video with your friends, and if you see someone you care about putting themselves in harm's way, stop them! Trains can sneak up on you and run at any time, so if you see tracks, always expect a train.

It's See Tracks, Think Train week, and The Wheeling partnered with the Stark County Sheriff's Office and other departments including Ohio State Highway Patrol to run an Operation Lifesaver Inc. special purposed in law-enforcement and education.

A pair of officers rode in the locomotive cab for a first-person POV of drivers running the gates, with other officers positioned in their vehicles along the line. They witnessed 6 violations. Other attendees in our theater car were treated to coffee, donuts, sandwiches, and an educational session by signal maintainer Don Harshbarger to learn about how crossings work and what to do in an emergency.

Remember, if a vehicle is hung up on the tracks or something is amiss at a crossing, call the number on the blue sign! It's a direct line to the railroad.

We're happy to announce that the tradition of our calendar contest continues! This year, with a few changes...

We love our railfans and their artful photography; we also acknowledge many of our employees have an appreciation for trains. So this year, the contest has been expanded, open to both railfans and Wheeling employees across all our properties, and all the railroads under The Wheeling umbrella are welcome for submission (W&LE, Union Railroad, Gary Railway, ABC Railway, Delray Connecting, Fairfield Southern, East Ohio Valley Railroad, Lake Terminal, Texas & Northern).

The grand prize winner will receive a $300 Amazon gift card; the Wheeling's own company photographers are excluded from the grand prize running. Submissions are open till Monday, October 5th at noon. Let's see your best!

Edit: To be clear, this contest is open to railfans, photographers, *and* employees. In years prior employees were ineligible.

Ever thought about working on the railroad? It’s not just “driving trains” as they say; a conductor plays a mental chess game to think ahead when making moves with railcars. Or, if you like working around heavy equipment, we want mechanics and electricians to work on our diesel-electric locomotives. This—is the America 250 Locomotive Celebration in Spencer, North Carolina, and The Wheeling sent our 1776 to take center stage. A gathering of this scale involves enormous coordination between railroads, and the result was a once-in-a-generation event that'll be talked about in history books!

The trend of painting patriotic-inspired locomotives for the 2026 Semiquincentennial started on the Wheeling (albeit by only a few hours) and the fervor spread throughout the industry.
Our compliments go to Norfolk Southern and the North Carolina Transportation Museum for their generosity in hosting and their strategic planners in getting our engine there and back—quickly and safely!
