Launched in 1924, this William Hand cruiser is a study in proportion, patience, and purpose.

We first took her back to bare truth—brightwork scraped to raw wood, decades of paint carefully removed from the topsides. What followed was a measured return: multiple hand-applied coats of marine varnish, the Dutch Wharf way building depth and warmth with every layer.

The cockpit is entirely wood, just as it was intended. The topsides are fair, painted and timeless—framing the brightwork rather than competing with it.

Reconditioned by the craftsmen at Dutch Wharf, this restoration honors not only the boat, but the hands and history that shaped her over the last century.

Wooden Boat Restoration | Dutch Wharf

The team at Dutch Wharf has completed full removal of failed varnish down to bare wood on this 1924 William Hand cruiser. We stripped and prepped the topsides and applied a flawless paint job.

Current focus is on the brightwork, where all surfaces have been taken back to raw wood to allow proper inspection and sealing.
Once that phase is complete, the vessel will move into deck work, followed by a full bottom restoration.

This is restoration work done in the correct order, starting with proper surface preparation and moving forward one system at a time.

Wasn’t planning to post boat repair content today, but this one’s too real not to share…

This sailboat came in with what seemed like a small soft spot on the deck. Nothing major—until Dutch Wharf took a closer look. Turned out there was water intrusion under the surface that had already started to rot the core. Wild how something that looks so minor from the outside can be hiding real damage underneath.

We handled it fast—a clean 3-foot section cut, and beginning stages for new core installation . Could’ve been a full deck job if it sat much longer. Stay tuned for updates on this job

Moral of the story? Don’t ignore the “small stuff.” Soft spots can sneak up on you, and your boat deserves better than crossing fingers. Glad this one was caught in time…….
