“How much does wheelchair transportation cost?”

It's one of the most common questions we receive, and the answer depends on the trip.

Private-pay transportation isn't usually one flat price because several things can affect the cost, including:

Pickup and drop-off locations

Total mileage

Wheelchair vs. stretcher transportation

Time of day

Weekend or holiday transportation

Additional equipment or assistance needed

Services such as oxygen, stair chair assistance or extended wait time

That's why Skyline provides a quote based on the actual details of your trip.

The more information you provide when requesting a quote, the more accurately our team can determine what your transportation will require.

“Can you transport someone who uses a power wheelchair or mobility scooter?”

Yes, depending on the size and type of mobility device.

Wheelchair transportation isn't limited to traditional manual wheelchairs. Skyline Transport can accommodate a range of power wheelchairs and mobility scooters in our wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

When requesting transportation, it’s important to let us know exactly what type of mobility device the passenger uses. This helps our team make sure we send the appropriate vehicle and confirm that the device can be safely accommodated.

Have two family members who both use mobility devices? Let us know. Some of our vehicles can accommodate more than one wheelchair or mobility device at the same time.

“Does the driver just drop my loved one off at the curb?”

That’s an important question to ask when arranging transportation.

Skyline Transport provides door-through-door assistance.

Our service is designed to go beyond simply pulling up to the curb, opening the vehicle door and driving away.

For many of the people we transport, getting safely between the vehicle and the entrance is just as important as the ride itself.

That’s especially true for older adults and individuals using wheelchairs or other mobility equipment.

When you’re comparing transportation companies, ask exactly what level of assistance is included.

“Transportation” can mean very different things depending on who you call.

“Can I ride with my mom or dad during their transportation?”

In many cases, yes.

We understand that sometimes a passenger needs—or simply feels more comfortable having—a family member or caregiver accompany them.

Skyline Transport allows one companion to ride along with the passenger when arrangements are made for the trip and vehicle capacity allows.

If someone will be accompanying the passenger, just let our team know when you’re booking.

It’s a small detail, but for families coordinating transportation for an aging parent or loved one, it can make the entire experience a little easier.

“What is a will-call return?”

If you’ve ever scheduled transportation for a medical appointment, you know it can be almost impossible to predict exactly when you’ll be finished.

That’s where a will-call return comes in.

Instead of scheduling your return trip for a specific pickup time, a will-call return allows you to contact us once your appointment is complete and you’re ready to be picked up.

For example, your appointment may start at 10:00 AM, but you don’t know whether you’ll be finished at 11:00 AM or 1:00 PM. Rather than guessing, your return trip can be scheduled as a will-call.

Once you’re finished and ready for your return, you let us know and we coordinate your pickup based on driver availability.

Will-call returns can be a great option for doctor appointments, procedures and other trips where the end time is unpredictable.

“What if my loved one can’t safely sit upright in a wheelchair for the trip?”

That’s one of the situations where stretcher transportation may need to be considered.

Stretcher transportation can be appropriate for individuals who need to remain lying down during transportation but do not require emergency ambulance services.

Every situation is different, which is why we ask questions before scheduling the trip.

We’ll want to understand the passenger’s mobility, where they’re being picked up, where they’re going, accessibility at both locations and any additional needs that could affect the transportation.

Our goal isn’t simply to book a trip. It’s to make sure the transportation we’re providing is appropriate for the passenger.

“Can I book medical transportation myself without going through insurance?”

Yes.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that you have to go through a hospital, nursing facility or insurance company to arrange wheelchair or stretcher transportation.

You don’t.

Skyline Transport works directly with private-pay clients and families throughout the Tampa Bay area.

That means if Mom has an appointment next week and needs wheelchair transportation, you can call us directly to schedule it.

The same applies to many stretcher trips, procedures, hospital discharges and other non-emergency transportation needs.

No referral is required to contact us and discuss your transportation needs.

“How does my wheelchair actually stay secure while the vehicle is moving?”

This is something every wheelchair passenger and family member should feel comfortable asking.

A wheelchair should never simply be rolled into a vehicle and left unsecured.

Proper wheelchair transportation requires specialized securement equipment and a driver who knows how to use it correctly.

At Skyline Transport, our wheelchair vehicles utilize Q’Straint securement equipment, and our drivers receive wheelchair securement training.

Before the vehicle moves, the wheelchair and passenger must be properly secured.

If you or someone you love regularly uses wheelchair transportation, ask your transportation provider about their equipment and training.

Safety isn’t something you should have to assume.

“I have a procedure coming up and they told me I need someone to take me home. What are my options?”

Depending on the procedure and your mobility needs, a friend or family member driving you may not always be an option.

Some patients may need wheelchair or stretcher transportation after being released.

Skyline Transport provides prearranged transportation for patients coming home from outpatient procedures, surgeries and medical appointments throughout the Tampa Bay area.

And because you may not know exactly what time you’ll be released, we can discuss return-trip options when your transportation is scheduled.

Our biggest advice? Don’t wait until the day of your procedure to figure out how you’re getting home.

Plan your transportation ahead of time so it’s one less thing you or your family have to worry about.
