My business is electronics and electrical, but I often find my self leaning on what I learned from master machinists in the refinery where I was a young engineer.

I had to swap out an open array radar base that had a custom mount with M12 studs due to the thick hard top deck.

Solution? Double nut the studs and simply wind them out. Simple.

A 48 ft trawler transiting the Great Loop upgraded to lithium batteries while en route; however, the installer did not consider the entire system. Charging was constrained by the Magnasine inverter/charger. This meant running the generator 6 to 7 hours per day.

The solution: install multiple Victron Multiplus-II inverter chargers, which can replace daily power consumption in just over 2 hours per day. The constraint now to charging the 1,840 A-Hrs of house batteries is physical space for mounting the Victrons (and budget). Bulk charging takes 30% capacity of the Northern Lights 12 kW generator.

Other improvements:
- replaced Balmar Duo charger with Victron Orion XS charger, coupled with SmartBattery Sense on the engine start battery (the Duo had failed)
- installed a Balmar APM-12 alternator protection module, which protects the alternator diodes from electrical spikes when the batteries may shut off
- connected Multiplus units to existing Victron Cerbo GX
- connected Epoch Pro V2 lithium batteries to existing Cerbo GX
- added a second MPPT solar panel controller for the 3 panels, and changed to parallel operation on 2 panels instead of all panels 3 in series (shadow and loose connection risk)
- removed the AIMS Power battery disconnects, which the battery installer represented as “alternator volt regulators.” (These devices would actually shut off the batteries when they were fully charged and the solar panels were in absorption mode.)

Chapter 1 of another lightning strike remediation. Replaced older chartplotter with new Garmin 8616 that has horizontal aspect ratio instead of vertical. Mounted it into a new SeaView helm pod that is custom fit to the dash. Also added external, USB-connected SD card reader since Garmin unit has inaccessible card reader.

I've been using ChatGPT to write Node-RED programming code for controlling Victron Energy GX controls on a boat. It's like having a 22 year old employee (who's really fast), but after it gives you an answer, you have to stop and ask, "is that code as streamlined as possible?" The AI will then come back with a tighter, more refined version.

But it still does better coding than me!

Case study in bad power application. Two, 3-year-old flooded lead acid batteries in parallel to run a 12 volt thruster. Batteries barely met the recommended CCA for the thruster and they used SAE posts rather than 3/8” or M10 threaded studs. Adapter was not fully fit to the post, and the adapter’s stud MELTED THE LEAD, perhaps due to the bad connection or a dry cell and dead battery. Remaining battery would only put out 30 amps to thruster, so it’s functionally dead.
